Finally saw Tahara last night. Not sure how many people here would enjoy it but I thought it was great. It did a great job capturing a very specific friendship dynamic in queer adolescence. The writing felt so grounded in the age of the characters instead of an adult projecting onto them

Saw a post about this on Reddit and a lot of the comments were saying how it’s risky to play a superhero character young in your career because there’s a high chance you may be typecast as only that type of role or only known as that character. Tom Holland’s name (and Mark Hamill’s) was brought up a bit in relation to this. What do you all think? Is playing a superhero or being in superhero movies bad for your career if you are a young actor?

playing a superhero at any age is bad

  12. Getting trapped in a Disney/Marvel contract definitely sounds like it would be good on paper, but would potentially block you from doing other stuff due to scheduling conflicts and whatnot, I imagine.

It is always a bummer when a talented actor or director gets tied up with Disney/Marvel/Star Wars etc.

  14. Nothing wrong with getting that Disney money and getting out if you can.

It's been said enough but the effects of Disney's increasing share of the entertainment landscape are bad for everything and I wish more actors were brave enough to tell them no

Two of the most talented young actors today came from the Twilight series, so it isn't impossible to climb out of these sorts of things.

I am usually sadder when it is someone who has a reputation for good work. Ryan Coogler's Creed was promising, but now he is a cog in the machine. Barry Jenkins is doing a Lion King prequel. Mark Ruffalo always brought an interesting dimension to his films but is now playing a green monster. In the early stages of his career comeback, Robert Downey Jr. was special until those paychecks started rolling in.

The landscape is so different from when Twilight came out. The demand Marvel and Disney put on an actor’s time is way more than Twilight would have been. To make it comparable to the MCU, they’d make those first Twilight films and then have to keep those characters going in a two part crossover with Harry Potter and maybe a TV series about Edward Cullen in the 1890s or something. Imagine if The Godfather came out in 2012 instead of 1972, would the next decade of Al Pacino’s career be a Disney/Marvel obligation, the way it largely was with Robert Downey Jr? And to be honest, outside of Chadwick Boseman and Benedict Cumberbatch, I can’t think of many actors or directors who have gone to Disney’s multimedia IP/franchises and done anything particularly interesting outside of it

Is there a "typical" Marvel contract in terms of how many movies/shows you are signed on for?

  20. Nathan

Always do the right thing. Supporter

I don't know about "typical", but what I found googling turned up that Sebastian Stan signed a 9 movie deal in 2014. Anthony Mackie's was for 10. Mark Ruffalo signed a 6 movie contract that started with the 2012 Avengers movie. Apparently Paul Rudd said most of the (I assume Avengers) actors are on a 3 movie deal, but his is for more. They also seem to update the contracts semi-frequently based on their plans for the character.

It seems to depend on a case-by-case basis, but around 5-6 appearances seems pretty normal. I think Sebastian Stan's initial contract was for, like, 9 or something? Oscar Isaac managed to sign a contract for just one Moon Knight season, which I'm guessing was a requirement on his part after Star Wars and a bad X-Men movie. Not sure if other established actors in recent years have similarly demanded shorter commitments.

In an ideal world, people would be able to jump onto one superhero movie, maybe with an opportunity for a standalone trilogy with healthy gaps in between, and have fun with the genre without worrying about the Disney/Marvel machine.

I have only seen three of the movies, so I am not really an expert on the area, but who really "deserves" to break out? Is Tom Holland a promising actor?

Someone made the comparison to Mark Hamill earlier, and I think about that one a lot. How do you go from the biggest franchise of all time to being almost exclusively a voice actor? He didn't seem like that great of an actor, especially the weird way he tries to portray a wise Jedi in the third film.

When I saw Ewan McGregor at FanExpo a few weeks ago he said that when he got offered the part of Obi Wan, his uncle (Wedge Antilles in the originals) told him if he wanted a career after it don't take the part.

I mean, out of curiosity I looked at the IMDb pages for Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Elizabeth Olsen, and Benedict Cumberbatch. You can see in the mid-2010s where the MCU really starts eating up their time, plus streaming and the emergence of Disney/the pursuit of franchise IP "content" changes the kinds of movies that get made/released in theaters:
