AMC sucks. Their projection quality can vary and the local ones near me have inconvenient showtimes and don’t keep most of the movies I want to see for more than a week it feels like.

Moviepass locked me out of my account when I was using it a lot, telling me I was suspended because I was logged into multiple devices, which was untrue. But until then I saw so many movies when I could. It was an insane value.

There are 2 AMCs close to me but both suck. The good one is like a 30 minute drive so I just have the Cinemark+ thingy which basically just saves me on dumb fees and I get a discount on food/drinks.

  4. Moviepass was perfection for the year my wife and I had it. We live across the street from a Cinemark theater, and we'd see every movie that came out. We still live in the same apartment, so if Moviepass is even a little bit better than just buying 2 movie tickets at full price each time we want to go to a movie, then it will be a no-brainer for us.

There isn't a Regal or AMC theater very close to us (especially not within walking distance) so those ones are out of the question for us. Too much of an inconvenience to begin with.

I was at an AMC yesterday. Every time I've been there someone has to tell them to turn the lights off.

A Regal just opened that’s a 15 minute walk from my apartment but there are also 3 AMCs in Burbank that mostly show different things. Still not sure I’m ready to go back to a theater but I have to look at both options and see which makes the most sense

The AMC by me is pretty high quality, just expensive AF. I almost always wait until films hit the cheap theater.

  8. I guess I'm just lucky I've never had a bad experience at the AMCs here in the LA area

He’s right and I’m glad someone besides myself has said it amidst the recent “method acting is nonsense” interviews

when people complain about method acting, it seems like their only frame of reference for it is jared leto lol

It doesn't help that his "method acting" has gotten significantly more exposure than anyone else's. Dude really does ruin everything

A lot of people don't really understand what method acting is. It started in Russian theater as a response to the very rigid performances of the theater, where you had to follow very precise beats and moments. It is about getting into character. When your co-star's character dies, method acting is crying because you feel like you are really losing a friend rather than doing an impression of what a person in that situation might do. If you are shooting a fight scene, you believe you are in a fight to the death rather than counting the blocking in your head. It is important to remember how artificial movie acting is; you can be set against a green screen, or your scenes are shot out of order, or any other variety of artifice. It can be hard to get into deep emotions with the snap of a finger, so it makes sense to try and find a way to stay in that mental space.

We have also gotten so used to "realistic acting" that we forget that there are other types. That is why a lot of people think Nicolas Cage is a bad actor when he plays characters so broadly, or people raised with modern movies have a really hard time with 30s-50s acting.

We watched the Beowulf film for class this week. They were mad about the ambiguity of the ending and a kid asked me to go to YouTube to look up an ending explained video. I almost cried.

  16. I remember being in high school and thinking the 2007 Beowulf looked amazing when it came out, and now it probably looks like a bad video game cutscene compared to contemporary works.

Wonder if that reduces the number of nominees or if they just expand it to 10 for the acting categories

It should be 10. Most films only have one director/editor/cinematographer, and if not they are nominated together. Films with just one actor are pretty rare.
