he's doing this because in ten years or so he'll release a movie about an actor coming out of retirement

I'm not sure he officially retired before, but he'd been in and out of acting. I wouldn't be surprised either way, if he never appears onscreen again or if he comes back in like, 2024, but he makes movies so infrequently that it weirdly doesn't feel like losing a whole lot, to me. Immeasurably talented, yes, but he made like, 15 movies in the last 30 years, and its not like all of them were essential.

It's fun. Fun makes sense, in my opinion. I have a solid group of friends and we get together about once a month and get super drunk and watch terrible movies and I can honestly say that when I move it'll be what I miss the most. We have the best time and laugh our asses off.

My favorite show of all time, enjoy. Although, with the release of Twin Peaks season 3, it's hard to say. My love for both is probably equal but for different reasons.

If you are having such a good time, how is the movie bad?

I wouldn't say that something's entertainment value is synonymous with quality. Aren't you a fan of Prometheus? Surely you can agree that, while that movie has some interesting aspects, one would be hard pressed to call it "good" as a whole. Then there are movies like Samurai Cop that are so genuinely bad, that miss the mark in nearly every way, that they are just so entertaining and fun to behold. I mean, look at this scene, it's wrong in nearly every way, but it's wrongness offers an interesting sense of entertainment that you won't find in a well made movie. Now imagine watching this drunk off your ass. It's fun, but I wouldn't necessarily call it "good." This is a silly discussion though.

I thought Prometheus was okay. If I thought it as bad, I wouldn't enjoy it.

This whole thing reminds me of when people say there is a difference between their favorite movie and the best movie. It is letting someone else assign worth to something that is personal.

Is there any room for objectivity in film criticism then, in your opinion?

I guess I just feel like I can enjoy a movie in the same way I enjoy Taco Bell compared a nice home cooked meal. One is clearly better than the other but they serve different needs. Have you ever gotten a group of friends together and watch a supposed "garbage" movie? If you haven't, just give it a shot and there is always the possibility that you'll have fun.

I forget who said it, but the quote was something along the lines of "the only thing objective in film is running time and aspect ratio". Even among some of the most widely held beliefs about film, there are dissenters (I am perplexed at how Vertigo is called the greatest film of all time, for example).

I would compare Taco Bell, or fast food in general, to lowbrow films. Within that spectrum there is good lowbrow (Anchorman, Chick-fil-a) and bad lowbrow (Saw, Arby's). Obviously you don't want to watch a deep drama every day, and you don't want to eat fast food every day, but they fill you up depending on mood. We are on the same track, but the only real difference is the way in which you define those lowbrow experiences. I don't really have much experience with those infamous "bad" films like The Room or Troll 2, but Jaws: The Revenge fits that bill. I wouldn't call it good, but I would not call it bad either, mostly because it is very funny. Obviously that probably wasn't the intention but I remember the movie much more vividly than a lot of more critically acclaimed works over the years. Batman and Robin might be another one, but it is the best Batman movie ever made.

I don't have people over because I don't want them to mess up my home or eat my food or use my bathroom. We usually just go to bars and make wry observations. I don't know where they live and they don't know where I live and it works out better.

Been on a run of checking out older movies that I've never seen but finally decided it's ridiculous to be 26 and not have watched them. So far I've watched Casablanca, Dr. Strangelove, Apocalypse Now, and On The Waterfront. All great movies. Apocalypse Now was not at all what I had been led to believe. It honestly might be on of the most terrifying movies I've ever seen in terms of its depiction of war.

I've known quite a few people to watch it for the first time recently. All of them were blown away.

All are brilliant. Apocalypse Now and On the Waterfront are masterpieces, very close personal favorites of mine. Waterfront contains potentially my favorite film performance of all time, Apocalypse Now bucks the Truffaut "making a film about war always ends up being pro-war" saying. Both are works of intricate and nuanced brilliance I could gush over for a very long time.
