in general she's right, although the BFG's main character was a little girl (if you dont count the giant)

Never really noticed this..but in all fairness, he doesn't have to. Personally, I'd rather see a great female story directed by a female. I dunno, I just think the first step is getting woman noticed as writers and directors..then let's focus on the stories.

Taking a look a his filmography, a lot of his movies are true event movies or they just wouldn't fit. There are a few exceptions. I think calling out a titan like Spielburg can't be a good career move.....

I generally favor artists making whatever art compels them and don't hold it against individual authors whose work isn't all that diverse, but rather focus on the climate of almost exclusively straight cis white guys who are hired and given money to make movies.

I'd be interested to see the gender breakdown on films Spielberg produced.

 

like come on colin treverrow has made three complete dogshit movies and he gets to make a star war. and kathleen kennedy is talking some bullshit on how no female directors are "ready" or they don't want to put them in that high pressure situation? nonsense.

 

I feel you, it's way easier to say criticize Dunkirk for having an exclusively white male cast, which I'll still see, than address the system

did you really not like Safety Not Guaranteed that much?
I do agree that it seems excessive to give somebody with such a small track record a major reboot and the finale to one of the biggest franchises.

edit: I'm also very much looking forward to Book of Henry.

 

The problem I have with him directing Star Wars is that he doesn't seem to really have a vision. You can watch a movie and be like, "oh that's definitely JJ" or "that's totally Rian Johnson" but Treverrows movies don't really have a unique voice imo.

 

Jurassic World and Book of Henry were so terrible I'm starting to suspect Safety Not Guaranteed, which I liked fine at the time but wasn't particularly moved by, might not hold up.

I mean I'm one dude with his opinions so take it for whatever you will, but Colin Treverrow has the most unjustified career trajectory I think I've ever seen. Decent indie leads to absolutely horrendous giant blockbuster leads to terrible sappy family drama and a Star Wars trilogy episode. A just world would have granted genuinely brilliant Amy Heckerling a tenth of the backing and trust Treverrow's mediocre, uninteresting ass has gotten.

I know Jurassic World made a bajillion dollars but Star Wars is too big to fail, five bad Star Wars movies in a row have made unimaginably colossal money, why not be as diverse behind the camera as they've started trying to be in their casting?

 

Cameron was justified in shitting on Jurassic World to Colin's mother. She should be ashamed of her son.
