I think it’s more, like others have said, not having to worry about one day logging on to a streaming platform and finding out that some thing has suddenly been removed.

With that being said, I will usually only buy physical DVD/Blu-ray if they come with extras or visible thought was put into the packaging. Criterion obviously does this well. Unless it’s an all-time favorite I’m not gonna buy just a bare-bones packaged DVD like you’d find in the Walmart five dollar bins.

not only that but the fact that you don't have to keep subscribing to an increasing amount of streaming services as much, etc....but also is streaming visual quality as guaranteed to stay as consistently good as HD and UHD disc? Genuinely wondering,i might be having another boomer moment tbh

I think audiophiles/videophiles are in the minority and most people can't tell the difference between sd and hd unless it's glaringly obvious

In theory, with a good internet connection, yes most streaming is in 1080p, same as Blu-ray discs. Less often you get 4K on streaming, which is 4K UHD discs, but some shows/movies/services do stream in 4K these days.

I find that the difference between DVD (480i) and Blu-ray (1080p) is very evident for most people, but BD to UHD is really hard to tell unless you have a huge ass TV with an amazing set up

If I were to dumb it down to the most diluted overview, these are the trends I see the most:

Movies on DVD: Walmart crowd, middle America, skews older
Movies on BD/UHD: Younger collectors who want a physical collection to keep forever

TV Shows on DVD: Walmart crowd, middle America, skews older. Classic shows (60s-80s) sell way better than modern shows
TV Shows on BD: Almost no one, but mostly collectors, at a much much lower volume that those who buy movies

  10. I still have all the DVDs for Boy Meets World, Seinfeld, TMNT, The Office, and Workaholics, but I don't think I've watched a single disc in close to 8 years probably. These days, I prefer to rip/download digital copies of everything and store it all on my computer/Plex. That way, I don't have to worry about streaming services taking it offline or anything, and I don't have to worry about how I'm going to play my old DVDs. I haven't owned a DVD player in over 15 years, and I got a new computer a year ago that doesn't even have a CD drive on it.

I understand the argument about streaming services taking things down, but if it is not easily accessible streaming you have the moral authority to torrent it. Physical media goes out of print and then a digital copy is more "permanent" than paying 80 dollars for a used copy on Amazon.

The older I get the less I care about owning physical media. I haven’t bought a blu ray in years and stopped buying vinyl a few months ago.

I don't own a blu ray player and I will not compromise for 480p content. If I want to own something, I buy it digitally.

9.5/10 times these days a blu ray or 4K blu ray will come with a free digital copy. So you get the best of both worlds. I like having a physical collection and I like having a copy that is mine and no dependent on a streaming service, so I buy them. But I also don’t buy a ton of them, only stuff I’m really looking forward to/stuff I really love. Like I just bought Licorice Pizza this week on blu ray.

  17. It's crazy how affordable DVDs of entire series are now. Like, Schitts Creek is 6 seasons and sells on Amazon for less than $30. I remember buying season 2 or 3 of The Office for around that much back in the day, I think.

I realized I never really listen to them so I just stopped. I’d rather spend it on tattoos and actual experiences.

  19. I buy a lot less vinyl than I used to (mainly because I’ve ran out of room on my shelves) but yeah, I also don’t really listen to records very often. Maybe only once a week, if I’m feeling wild.

I used to own like 2000 DVDs but when I discovered Plex, physical media just no longer made any sense.
