I'm enjoying this increasing amount of actors talking about how dumb method acting is

With all the method acting discourse of the last couple years it’s become apparent that almost no actors actually know what method acting is

I mostly agree with the sentiment of that tweet but not everybody has the time or jobs that allow them to really dig into film on a serious level. I like that they make the effort to recommend things rather than just bitch about it.

They have distributed some great films, but I am always so confused by the fandom. Neon and Annapurna and Roadside and Magnolia release a lot of great films too, but people don't have the same reverence. It isn't like A24 has some impeccable record; Goat was a borderline self-parody of an art film.

I see a lot of lines in the sand as the landscape gets more fractured. I can't even count the number of times I have recommended a film to someone and the first question is "is it on Netflix/Disney Plus/HBO Max?" or whatever streaming service they pay for. When it isn't, you can tell by their face they are not going to watch it.

People thinking a studio represents quality is so weird, I wouldn't be like so and so is a Merge musician

Also it diminishes the director and writer etc

A24 marketed themselves as a brand in a way that I don't think any media production/distribution company has ever done so successfully. The timing helps too, with the rise of Twitter, Tik Tok, and Letterboxd, in film discourse on social media I think it became an easy reference point for a lot of people, particularly young people, whose entertainment taste lies outside of superheroes and blockbusters and who have probably never cared/knew about production and distribution companies like Focus Features or Magnolia. To be honest I've long thought film/entertainment merchandise was a market that seemed largely untapped, so it's made sense to me that when a company like A24 is able to successfully market themselves as cool, quality, and alternative, it's taken off. Not that I'm interested in wearing a shirt or hat that says A24 on it, but when I was 16 I probably would have.

I dunno, back in the day I would have probably watched anything put out by Fox Searchlight or even Miramax. Horror fans had a connection to Dimension.

Yes, it is essentially Hot Topic or whatever camp people were in in high school.

I don’t think this is true, people definitely do this with smaller labels esp in the realm of indie/punk/electronic, etc. Even more so pre-social media.

  24. Exactly the analogy I was going to make. Drive-Thru, No Sleep, and Run For Cover immediately come to mind as labels that positioned themselves as curators for people with a certain set of tastes.
