I just watched it for the first time a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it.

We were supposed to have state tests today, but a power issue made them cancel it. I put on Saving Private Ryan for the kids since we are learning about World War II, and it is interesting how little they are moved by the techniques Spielberg uses. All of that stuff has been stolen by so many other filmmakers that it seems quaint to them now.

We pretty much only watched the beginning and the D-Day battle. That is still gripping to me no matter how many times I see it.

That's even crazier then. I'd say it's the best battle scene ever. It's captivating every single time.

I have problems with the rest of the movie, but the battle scene is a masterpiece in its own and the definitive example of realist cinema in a war context. I teach World War II every year and the images from that film still inform my view of the war despite how many articles I read or documentaries I watch.

The rest of the movie is hit and miss. It never comes close to the opening scene but there are still some good moments, particularly the final standoff. Though it's the writing I have more issue with than directing.
Honestly though I was the same way at that age and it took extremes to break me out of it. Guys like Wes, Malick, and Ozu particularly. Their style just demands examination.

When I was high school the only movie they ever showed was October Sky. I must have seen it thirty times in high school. The only other movie we would watch is the Donald Duck math movie.

I saw October Sky and that scuba movie with Cuba Gooding Jr a lot. I don't know what Donald Duck math movie is but it sounds terrifying.

Growing up, I heard that one of my relatives was in Dead Poets Society, but I never bothered to watch it. Then, from the time of the eleventh grade to graduation, I had watched it five times, each time in a different class. I couldn't escape

Jesus is Hollywood ever going to get out of this franchise/sequel/reboot bubble it's gotten itself into

I feel bad for Guillermo to some extent but him making original movies with Michael Shannon is probably better, I know Crimson Peak had issues but there was some greatness in there

Honestly, it's weird. I don't think so, not for quite some time. We have Marvel movies slated to the mid 20's and Star Wars into the 30's. Eventually you would assume there would be diminishing returns on projects like this but I dunno.

I also don't think reboots and remakes are inherently bad things. I take issue with the fact that a lot of the times they are cheap cash grabs that don't expand upon or add anything new to the source material.

yeah there are reboots that work, Charlie's Angels and 21 Jump Street come to mind, it's more the over-saturation of reboots/sequels/etc

I don't think they're inherently bad either, but I just realized that Dunkirk seems to be the only blockbuster coming out this summer not based on an already established property. Like, Hollywood was doing just fine for decades. Sequels have always been a thing, of course, but there were movies taking a chance left and right. Now, it's like all of that was only to get the industry to a place where they could rest on their laurels and take in the dough

  22. Did someone say Crimson Peak?

Managing a theatre, I have a love-hate relationship with the reboot/sequel trend. As much as I'm not a fan of it, my theatre honestly wouldn't survive if it wasn't a thing. These movies make up 80% of our business or more.
