Well when I read The Master, my first instinct as a user of this forum is to commend you on your taste, but then the rules of the Entertainment Forum dictate that I immediately have the urge to call you an uncultured philistine for liking the other two.

    Truly a predicament.

Honestly I’ve stopped caring about what other people like or don’t. I’m not gonna go out of my way to shit on something that brings people joy unless it’s like actively bigoted and harmful or whatever. I’d much rather talk about stuff I’m into than not, personally.

I feel like the scenes on the beach with Freddie would play out pretty much the same with Billy

Billy Madison and The Notebook are too huge to mean much unless they were your favorite movie or something. The Master means you are willing to watch offbeat cinema and are definitely not a Scientologist and probably distrustful of religion in general.

I’m gonna have a slightly different impression of someone who tells me their favorite film of all time is Avengers: Endgame than someone who says it’s Citizen Kane. And a slightly different impression if someone else says Solaris, and slightly different if someone else says Joker, and slightly different if someone else says Yi Yi, and slightly different if someone else says Grown Ups 2, none of which is to say I know enough about any of these hypothetical people to determine whether or not they’re good, moral people, but I am making a small judgement based off taste because that’s normal.

An example that used to be used was Seinfeld people versus Friends people. There is nothing wrong with being a Friends person (the nicest person on this forum is a Friends person), but I know that if they are a Seinfeld person that their sense of humor is going to more likely mirror mine.

It is weird to look at this stuff in a vaccuum because the people who make our shows and films have social, moral, and political messages in them, and the way you react to them is a reflection of your views.

And that judgement can be informed and change! I have a film school friend who is very smart and has deep knowledge and appreciation for Yasujiro Ozu and that’s how we got to know each other. When he told me Paul WS Anderson is a better filmmaker than Paul Thomas Anderson I thought he was kidding but he was being sincere. That’s insane, and affected my thoughts on his thoughts, but as we got to know each other he backed up all his insane takes with reasonable analysis that comes from a different perspective than mine. I still disagree but I understand him better and he’s a friend I enjoy talking movies with. If he’d led with the Paul Andersons statement, I would have had a very different impression of him than if we had not bonded over Ozu first, but again it’s not that I’m writing off a human being based on taste, but small value judgements happen instinctively and as long as you don’t get weird about it like the people talking red flag/green flag movies in the tweet that kicked all this off, it’s fine

That is why it was disappointing that the guy who called Toy Story 2 the greatest American film ever made did not explain why. I want to see into that mind.

For mainstream films, Batman and Robin. For art films, My Blueberry Nights.

I couldn’t think of any off the top of my head, so I looked some up. Surprisingly, Hot Rod did poorly with critics, so that’s my answer.
