The best rental stores were the ones with a “back room.”

The true red flag is thinking that someone’s taste in movies is at all indicative of anything about them. Most people in general have what all of us here would probably consider bad taste, and many people who have “good” taste are often shitty and weird in some form or another, eg all of us

Of course taste says something about someone. What else is art for?

there are plenty of people on this site that like kanye west’s music still. that doesn’t mean that since his public about face in 2016, all of the sudden, liking his art says something different about you. it can be applied to basically anyone. liking shrek but not liking the master doesn’t make you a worse person. what a baffling stance.

You just need art to be a metric to judge people by because you’re lacking so hard in every other taste department - clothes, food/drink, etc

There are people who attach their identity to their favorite works of art in negative or concerning ways. Knowing someone likes The Wolf of Wall Street doesn’t tell me whether they’re a cinephile or someone who thinks Jordan Belfort is someone to look up to. But taste in art can inform personality in some cases

All of these things can be indicative about the traits of a person.

For example, if someone really liked Never Rarely Sometimes Always, I have an idea of their opinion on abortion. On a larger scale, I would be very surprised if a Trump supporter watched art films.

Taste/preference in art or pop culture absolutely says something about someone. Wtf are any of you on this site for if you don’t believe that? But does liking a movie indicate if a person is “good” or “bad”? Absolutely not

This is literally all I’m talking about — hence what qualifies as a “red flag” or not

But I can still judge people based off their interests. I do it all the time!

If by “judge” you mean simply using that taste to discern that person’s general taste then yeah obviously. But that’s not what the original tweet/conversation was ever about! It was about red/green flags!

Yeah, there’s definitely a difference between saying a person’s tastes are a part of who they are, and saying “if [person] likes/dislikes [thing], I know they’re sus.”

A lot of it depends on how they show their fandom. I saw a guy with both the Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix Jokers tattooed on their chest and I decided he was not someone I wanted to interact with.

sure. that isn't what the original conversation was framed as. liking the joker, as much as it sucked, is not "a red flag." having joaquin joker tattooed on your test clearly is. they aren't the same thing lol.

They are mostly boring, like bumper stickers. However, I hold out hope for some good ones one day.

There are millions of people who like Joker, but if I asked someone their favorite movies and the two they picked were Fight Club and Joker, I would think that their political outlook is not the best. The same goes for their clothes, the way they talk, their mannerisms, their career, and so many other things. It doesn't mean it is automatic, but a red flag isn't automatic.

Yesterday, a guy passed me on the highway in full Ledger Joker garb, riding a motorcycle with a Joker paint job, with a girl in 2016 Suicide Squad Harley Quinn garb holding onto him.
