That is what it is (although you left out fun). That it became the template for decades of soulless blockbusters is a mark against it.

  2. That is true, but I don't think that's all it is, and I don't think that's the core of its legacy.

The first two Star Wars films are perfectly fine genre films, and Empire Strikes Back deserves some credit for going down a deeper path than the first film. However, the legacy of Star Wars (and Jaws) is ultimately more harmful than the quality of the films may be worth. They led to the destruction of the New Hollywood system and a general dumbing down of mainstream cinema.

Annie Hall obviously is not immune to influencing bad films, but bad romantic comedies have never had the impact and the reach of the blockbuster.

What are some of your favourite movies? Just curious

I think you meant to quote Morrissey, but I'll chime in to. I've been to the Cineplex this year to see Split, Get Out and Your Name. I try to go to the independent theater as often as possible. What about you?

Oh I'm a blockbuster junkie lol, but still love the smaller films like Midnight Special and such. I just love it all as long as its good. I don't even know where the closest independent theater here is where I live, probably in the city like 40 mins away....

I'm lucky enough to live in a city with two easily accessible small theatres during the school year, but this summer I'll be back to my small town's three blockbuster screens. Think the only thing I plan to see there is Spider-Man, and even then, it's not something I would go alone too, which is what I do for a lot of indie movies

  11. I have a couple theaters within 15min driving distance that show smaller films, which is great. Debating whether or not seeing Lost City of Z or Colossal are worth seeing in theaters.

Great recent blockbusters is close to being an oxymoron, but Mad Max fit that bill. Before that the last great one might have been WALL-E.

are the movies themselves really to blame for others turning their success in a formula to churn out blockbusters?

The audience deserves some blame as well, but yes.

In the West Wing, the decision to explain the Census to the audience by having Rob Lowe explain it to the Press Secretary is really weird. Are we really expected to believe that a key White House official would not know what the census is, and if so would ask a colleague instead of just looking it up? Why wouldn't that sort of exposition be done by having the question be asked by the young aide to the President?

I teach history and have degrees in History and Political Science, so I never really have a gauge on what the "average person" knows about politics, but I thought that most people knew what the Census was.

Trial and Error was a great show that apparently no one watched. I don't know if it's streaming anywhere, but I definitely recommend it.

As far as I can tell, it hasn't been cancelled... yet. The ratings weren't great though.

It was kinda similar to Arrested Development in that it was serialized and some of the jokes were recurring, so I think it might pick up a little steam if it were to drop on Netflix or something where people could binge it.

You have to sit through a couple ads, but you can watch the whole season on nbc.com for those interested.

I don't have much free time, but I really want to get lost in a TV show again. I haven't delved into anything since Mad Men. I've been somewhat interested in checking out Bojack Horseman, Rick & Morty, or Girls. Suggestions?

Coincidentally, I am three episodes into Rick and Morty. I have enjoyed it thus far, but it really has not reached that next level for me. Eastbound & Down, on the other hand, is so much fun. I have a soft spot for teachers behaving badly.
