I honestly don't care how anyone else watches their TV. Would I do it? No. But who cares what some randos you don't know on the internet do with their lives.

Mass-entertainment art is made to appeal to an audience. If people are watching shows at a faster speed, it indicates that they want to boil down these shows to their most basic properties. They don't want the nuances that come with a character contemplating something quietly, or they don't care about the timing of a joke. When studios get that message, they adapt to these trends.

I mean... that sounds like a problem with major studios, not the people who are simply doing what they want to do with their lives

It’s a symptom of the transformation of art into content. It devalues craft in favor of getting people to consume as much of Netflix’s (or Amazon’s, or whoever’s) content as possible. I never like to be the old man yelling at the cloud, but it’s one of several alarming red flags in the world of cinema and television as artistic mediums. We might as well include inserts in the shows and movies where someone says “this is where you should look up from your phone or whatever else you’re doing”.

I totally understand it, and on a personal level I totally agree it's all terrible, but I just can't get behind judging people for living their lives how they want.

Until we get into some sort of utopia where there is limitless money for all sorts of projects to be created to meet every whim, people do need to be called out on certain viewing habits because studios adjust the scope and focus of their creative output based on those larger trends. I asked if people really did watch shows at 1.5 speed because I don't believe I know anyone that does, but I would be critical of their decision if I did. Watching a show or movie is not an endurance test to get done quickly like a trip to the dentist or the DMV. It is the creative vision of directors, writers, and showrunners, and while everyone may disagree on the merits of the work, we should at least try to watch it as intended. That goes for people who want full-screen works to be made widescreen to "fill their screen", people who talk during communal viewing, colorization of black-and-white films, or fast-forwarding through a show.

The problem is you are trying to police people you don't know into doing what you believe is right.

I’m not policing anything, personally, but whether I’m talking about a Kelly Reichardt movie with someone or Sandy Wexler, if they watched it at 1.5x speed that would heavily influence what I thought of their opinions

I don't understand how anyone can watch something at a faster speed considering I sometimes need subtitles and to rewind shows to catch a single joke haha

i would never in a million years watch something at 1.5x but y'all get so bothered by the completely harmless choices of others around here, it's wild

Yeah I couldn't imagine watching videos that way, but don't care what other people do. It's suuuuper useful for podcasts, though. I speed those up all the time.
