The death of the movie star was definitely a "be careful what you wish for" moment, as the mega-franchises can exist without needing major names. They cast these actors pretty young, sign them to multi-film deals, and then just move on if they get too expensive. They do the same thing for directors and writers, thus ensuring complete corporate control.

While movie stars obviously did skew white in the past, it is worth noting that Will Smith was one of the last stars and the closest thing to a star these days is The Rock.

While no ones saying much should be music videos anymore, I'm shocked how they let their brand die like this. After TRL, it seems that the big heads didn't know where to go from there.

They knew how to he a successful cable network, but what do you do when cable dies?

Become more focused online, have more daily news stuff, live stuff. Be a streaming channel for God sakes.

I say shocking is the right word

didn't they try to bring TRL back as recently as two or three years ago and it already died?

  5. I’d love for MTV to go all in on the nostalgia and do something like:

Mondays: All things 80s (videos, interviews, etc)
    Tuesdays: 90s
    Wednesdays: Early 2000s
    Thursdays: Jackass, Next, etc
    Fridays: TRL reruns all day
Saturdays: a mix of 80s-early 2000s music videos all day
Sundays: True Life, Diary, Making the Video, etc

But really, I’d mostly love for them to just put every episode of everything on Paramount+ and call it good

yeah and it was really bad. It’s a different time now with social media that TRL just wasn’t necessary and they were legit just showing tweets and instagram post and had on people like lil xan.

Will Smith and Denzel Washington have also been the biggest movie star and most acclaimed Hollywood actor of their times as well. I saw another tweet on the subject that mentioned how someone like Tom Cruise used to be able to get movies like Eyes Wide Shut and Magnolia greenlit just with his attachment, and without movie stars stuff like that either doesn’t get made or gets made on a micro budget and isn’t seen by anyone. Obviously we still have auteurs making movies but they have to go to streaming services for funding.

For comparison's sake, the stars of some of the biggest franchises of the last few years have very little pull. The Twilight stars are doing great independent work, but it doesn't bring too much attention. The Star Wars kids have not done much so far. The Marvel people haven't had much crossover success except maybe on how hard they leaned in to Captain America's appearance in Knives Out.

Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver have done well for themselves, but they were both on the rise before Star Wars.

Oscar Isaac is doing a Marvel TV show, he likely has some pull but not a ton. Driver is working with a list of iconic filmmakers but I’m not sure how well those films have all crossed over aside from the Marriage Story meme. He’s maybe got a shot at being one of the last movie stars. We don’t exactly have the DiCaprio kind of movie star anymore where whatever they’re in generally does well and their name alone is enough for a studio to say yes. At least, not under 50 years old. Even Tom Cruise has adapted to the franchise model.

He had a ton of momentum after Creed and Black Panther. Haven't really seen much from him since unfortunately.

It's semi-related but it really annoys me when an actor who appears in the MCU does another movie and all the comments online are like "I didn't know Captain America did this" or "Hulk took a weird turn" or some shit like that. Like, there are other movies and these are very talented actors most of the time

I have a presentation tomorrow on media literacy. Part of my presentation is about subtle messaging in films. I have a piece about the military bankrolling films in order to get positive coverage, but what else am I forgetting?

Are you talking about the Production Code at all? That kind of background influence is still being felt today and there would be tons of great references on how they controlled public opinion on every topic imaginable.
