One of the things that also plays into it is that most actors are not really that talented. You have your Daniel Day-Lewis and Meryl Streep types, but most are conventionally attractive people who can play a couple of types and then later on they can maybe have a second act playing against that type. A lot of these actors haven't done much theater work and now television isn't looked at as a dump anymore so it is easier to rise with some bit roles and a few friendly calls from your uncle.
