Ever since Before Midnight I have felt that they will be separated and/or divorced in the fourth film and it would be some sort of forced encounter because of their daughters and they would struggle between those old feelings and their current status. Celine's feelings of inadequacy compared to Jesse's literary success, as well as her being torn between her maternal life and wanting to be an independent woman again, has made it feel like an inevitability even in Before Sunset.
