I may need to temper my displeasure at YouTube film critics because I have discovered YouTube video game critics and they are so much worse. One guy said that every scene in a video game should advance the plot and if not it was bad writing.

 

Time to pencil this in at the top of worst films of 2021.

I remember in highschool how amazing it was when the first superhero movies started coming out. It was a big deal to finally see X-Men and Spider-man done justice on screen. And to be fair, the MCU movies in most ways improve on those. Twenty shows and series later though and the fact that all anyone wants to watch and talk about is superheroes makes me mourn the days when cape shit was a modest portion of what got made.

Imagine all the sci-fi fantasy stuff we COULD be getting: Neuromancer adapted for screen, stories with world-building based in Chinese, Gaelic, African, Native American, etc mythologies in addition to Japan and medieval Europe or ones invented for comic book entertainment.

I grew up enjoying lots of IPs that dominate marquee space now, but we're being robbed of getting to experience new and more enriching stories in our lifetimes because nobody wants to venture out beyond Star Wars, Dawn of the Dead, superheroes, Terminator and Predator and it actually fucking sucks now. /oldmanrant
