Nope, can't do it anymore! Ruined forever.

So, is the consensus that doing a year per week would be most fun, in a similar format to the threads @Henry has been making lately? And @phaynes12, any thoughts on how to do the Excel sheet thing to keep track? Was it a pretty straightforward system y'all did? Since I'm the weirdo who calculated how much of a TV screen a couple different aspect ratios can cover, lol, I have no problem doing that part.

If people like it as an ongoing thing, I kinda like the idea of starting with 1999 & moving backwards. We'd be in the 70s by the fall & the 50s at the start of next year (if everyone doesn't get bored a couple months in, lol).

Wonder if it’s a countdown to when they’ll apologize to me for locking me out of my account

  5. Having Moviepass 3 or so summers ago (when it was all unlimited) was soooo awesome! Living right across the street from a Megaplex, my (now) wife and I would go to the theater constantly. We saw good movies, bad movies, and it didn't even matter, haha. If Moviepass comes back from the dead, it most likely won't be THAT great again, but I'm looking forward to seeing what this countdown is all about and if it will be something enticing.

I feel like trying to revive MoviePass is a bit like past attempts to revive MySpace, in that it does have a lot of name recognition & for some people nostalgia, but a lot of that name recognition actually works against it.

Except... in a lot of ways it's even worse, 'cause it was so infamously an awful business model that made a ton of super dumb mistakes along the way to become sustainable. Remember when it still existed, but you couldn't see basically anything? Remember when they tried to produce movies & started with Gotti? Remember the hijinx with kicking people out randomly who were costing 'em too much? Remember that email where they called some dog the head of "barketing" or whatever? lol.

I guess if you're ever gonna try, now's the time, when the COVID situation is looking rosier than ever (but still far from over), and theaters & studios wanna bring things back to life. But, still... lol.

I remember registering for MySpace v2 with @wade and Lueda in an attempt to see Justin Timberlake at SXSW many moons ago but it was a cluttered mess that I did not care for.

Also didn't get into that show, so I might have been a little bitter.

Ah that's actually a good point. I wonder if moviepass approached theater companies and said "hey, I think you guys might need us" (maniacal laugh).

Best movie watching year of my life. I miss going to theaters and its true, maybe this would get me back.

Watching Scream today in class. Part of the reveal requires the audience to know who Sharon Stone is...I might have to pause and explain

How are you allowed to show that?

On the syllabus with a disclaimer, babyyyy! I got in some trouble for Texas Chainsaw Massacre (a much less violent film), fought it, and got a new rule at the school passed regarding controversial films being shown. For whatever reason, no one fought Halloween or Scream being shown, two movies with more mature material (although not as disturbing, I guess).

Every year I show Saving Private Ryan and every minute I am worried each time the door opens. There used to be a rule that films had to be G rated, even for high school kids.

You've talked about the music taste of your students before, but what do they like/are most familiar with in terms of movies/tv shows? Have YouTubers and Twitch streamers just completely overshadowed those things at this point

You don’t need to know who Sharon Stone is, the first half of the sentence does the explaining.

    Uhhh general apathy, haha?
Every year I'll have a kid or two that catch references or has a deeper interest in film/tv, but for the most part it's apathy. I don't even know if Youtubers/Twitch streamers are that popular with them. There were a decent amount of kids in this class who had seen most, if not all, of the movies that I show, which was cool. Modern horror (Conjuring, Anabelle, It etc.) is pretty popular with them. In terms of shows, I hear Grey's Anatomy, All American and On My Block a lot. Marvel stuff, "Netflix" as a monolith. One kid really likes John Taffer/Bar Rescue, which is incredible.

Haha, Billy does clarify after Stu drops the Sharon Stone line, but I'd like to imagine them being completely lost or having to google Sharon Stone to understand the motive.

Should probably say "P.T. Anderson" so nobody confuses him with fellow auteur Paul W.S. Anderson
