The Oscar discussion has me wondering... have we done a “Chorus favorite films of [year]” list before?

That is a fun idea. We can start maybe in the 80s or so so more people can meaningfully participate.

I'd be down, would be a fun way to talk about older films and pick up new recommendations.

  6. yeah starting in the 60s or 70s and working forward sounds fun. are we just submitting our personal lists?

I'm not sure what the best approach would be. Maybe a thread for each year, & give each year/thread a week? Depends on what those interested in the idea would be most into.

  8. we did a similar thing for music in that forum, where you just ranked 50 albums. if we picked a starting year and everyone just cataloged their favorites, it shouldn't be too hard to throw in an excel sheet to track

I wonder to what extent these mega-franchises are doing more than just poaching young directors but are instead actively teaching them the wrong lessons which permanently alters their career. Colin Trevorrow is a punchline now, but Safety Not Guaranteed had a lot of critical success. The Russo brothers had never directed a film before being swallowed up, but they were veterans of well-respected TV shows. Having a film you directed make a billion dollars probably makes someone think they know what they are doing and could very well inhibit their ability to learn and grow as directors when they don't have everything laid out for them by producers and a script that requires continuity with the eighteen other properties that require a serialized story.

    run away with me Platinum

“What we’re doing on Gray Man that’s different [is]… we’re not gonna answer every question in the first movie," explained Joe Russo. "This is being conceived as a series of films, and again, potentially branching out, we could follow other characters, but we’re not gonna answer every question in the movie. So you’re gonna finish the movie, [and] have a complete story, but you’re still gonna have questions about the wider universe. And I think that’s one way to break the model a little bit, is to not give the audience everything in one film. Don’t have a close-ended narrative. Have an open-ended narrative that’s [like] a chapter in a book.”

  20. they have no directorial voice to speak of. what a surprise that when you strip away the big machine of the MCU they fall flat.

it’s a shame. the book is great and the film could have been in the right hands.
