I don't even know if there's people online that think superhero films and Raging Bull are trying to do the same things. Anyone saying they do I assume is just shitposting lol.

the “poptimism” idea is pretty prevalent and comes from the valid idea that a lot of low brow or often dismissed/marginalized art has quality that holds a similar value to great art, but became an overcorrection where, for one example, people think Avengers: Endgame is a masterpiece. There are plenty of adults who argue for more superhero and genre inclusion in esteemed awards shows or critical discussion, I know we don’t think much of the Oscars but plenty of people do, and often even on these forums someone will post a Richard Brody review of a comic book movie and people will mock the title alone for not seeing much artistic merit in the movie. The full article talks about the pushback when Scorsese said Marvel movies aren’t cinema and argues for the distinction, pretty well I think.

There are a lot of people on places like Twitter that try to showcase the cinematography of superhero movies like they weren't just made in a computer.

I think it's more a lot of people only want to watch superhero movies or Fast and Furious movies or whatever and I totally get that even if it can be dorky or silly

Years ago Ruth Graham wrote an article about YA literature and how actual adults should not be reading it so much. She even said the she did read them occasionally from time to time but that she was generally embarrassed by it and always wanted to seek out challenging works rather than succumbing to the comfort food. People got so mad at her for something that should be uncontroversial: YA fiction is not for adults.

The same applies to movies as well. Everyone is going to have their comfort shows and movies (because no one wants to watch a Bela Tarr-style film every day), but you need to branch out more. Everyone is guilty of going through the drive-thru sometimes but you don't brag about the great Whopper you had.

I think a lot of endgame is pretty masterful tbh. But Idk that I’d ever call it a masterpiece.

If you just want to watch garbage or YA-oriented stuff then whatever, but many of those people do have such an aggression towards the Scorsese types specifically because they are very clearly insecure about the fact that they know what they love is closer to the “product” end than the “art” end of the imagined spectrum. So they feel the need to justify their love for it by arguing that it *is* closer to the art end, even when that is so obviously not the case.

And also they are on the “winning” side in the sense that what they love is the mainstream, so they need to fashion a reality where the “snobs” are actually on the elite and powerful side of things, as if small production companies, Criterion, and Reverse Shot are the arbiters of taste and what gets made outside of a tiny numbers of people

My mom watched the Lost series finale with my dad and I without having watched a single minute beforehand.

  12. I’ve only seen the first disc of season 1, hahah. I rented it from Blockbuster one day when I was sick, watched it, and never rented the next disc or watched anything else from the show. There’s so many episodes I’d need to catch up on and it just always felt too daunting to me.

I found the only show that isn't insane to do it with and only watched the last episode of American Idol to see Kelly Clarkson win haha

Lights Camera Jackson makes me much angrier than he should, but imagining someone watching the Don phone calls without any of the context just seems like intentionally running something for yourself.

My wife watched the last two episodes of Mr Robot with me without having seen anything else. She liked it.

Twitter libs have chosen Gatsby as the book to shit on to show their performative wokeness. “Why should we care about the glorification of vapid millionaires?”

They clearly did not understand the book

Ah yes, the glorification of our rich heroes who are so psychopathic and empty they run over Myrtle and cover up how it happened and no one comes to Gatsby’s funeral. Clearly, much like Henry Hill, Jordan Belfort, and Frank Sheehan, these are aspirational figures.

Maybe we should just put giant disclaimers about who the heroes and villains are.

At least once a month there is a complaint about the literature canon that is taught in high school, but it was one of the few times as a child that many people are exposed to stuff like unreliable narrators, anti-heroes, and morally grey characters.
