There are people on this forum who are mean/tells others to shut up all the time, and we all understand that to be far less noteworthy than someone being actually bigoted. She’s not going after the people saying anti-Palestinian things towards her with the same fervor at all, she is instead conflating those people with people dragging her for a bad movie take and making them out to be on par with each other.

And I do feel like abstracting it out to be “a misapplication of an online strategy” so that you find it hard to pin it on her is just incorrect. She did what she did, and deserves to have it “pinned” on her accordingly. It’s not like she killed somebody, but there’s no need to downplay or obfuscate that fact, and her refusal to just own up to the fact that she did something bad is itself a whole different (and if anything, more notable) bad thing.

well yeah I meant literally wrong, not morally wrong. “Old movies suck” and “black and white movies suck” is literally wrong, many of them have valuable quality. You can broaden it to “she’s erasing non-white and non-male filmmakers like Oscar Micheaux and Ida Lupino and world filmmakers like Satyajit Ray and Yasujiro Ozu” if you wanted to make it a moral argument, but I understand that her initial statement was more talking about lionized, “canon” stuff like Citizen Kane. Which I think is dumb and I think a statement like “old/black and white movies suck” does erase those filmmakers, but I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt in that regard even though I think the initial statement is harmful on a mild “people should be curious about cinema as an art form” scale.

She’s also making an argument against her own work. “Old movies suck” means that in 50 years people shouldn’t care about her filmography. Her initial statements are just so frustrating, especially her implied jab at Scorsese. She tweeted “Fellini sucks”, and given his recent essay on Fellini and curation it’s hard not to see it as what she probably intends as a tearing down of the old white male canon, but Scorsese has done more to expand our canon and the availability of non-white world cinema than just about anyone. All of this hits me in a very specific bummer spot.

If she said Fellini sucks then I am taking it personally.

I can't see the tweets because I am on my work computer, but as a general rule if she just stops digging people will move on.

The tweet that said Fellini sucks also praise Goddard for being pro-piracy, which I honestly thought was pretty funny.

Anyways. I dunno. Maybe I’ll come back to this thread after work and, unlike Lexi, say I was wrong. But, I’m still honestly not mad at her (as disappointed as I am in parts of this), & I still find like half the response to her pretty annoying. *shrug*

It’s silly that she’s still making these purposely inflammatory, troll-like posts in the middle of a long, sincere thread about how she is being harassed for just expressing her opinion. Like stop pretending as if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Did not see Lexi Alexander going on a corncob rampage, butter and all lol. Also trying to get someone expelled from college for telling her to shut up is a Karen af move.

Twitter is the greatest of all social media platforms. Seemingly every day, someone decides to say the most ludicrous thing they can think of.

It is funny that someone who said "black and white movies suck" is a voting member of the Academy Awards, though.

It is so odd to see the directors of Daddy Longlegs get so famous that people are ripping off their work. That and the rise of Greta Gerwig are two of the most pleasant success stories I never would have believed ten years ago.

  20. Watched the matrix tonight for the first time in a long time. The CGI did not age well but the movie is over 20 years old so whatever. What stood out was how bad/slow some of the fight scenes were. More boring than I remember it being.

I mostly loved this article, though I do have a (maybe semantic) problem with defending the terms "elitist" & "guilty pleasure," which I maintain are both dumb terms that undercut some of the values & goals in this piece.

I'm a big fan of "art"/"entertainment" language because I think it does a good job of explaining that the two are completely different goals (that can still overlap in certain contexts).

Yeah I don’t agree with absolutely everything written but found it largely a solid piece that gets at how to engage with art and entertainment in ways that are meaningful for both and engage with that overlap honestly. It’s tough. But I like thinking about it.

How prevalent is the attitude in the real world and not just online? I don't know anyone old enough to buy alcohol that would seriously argue that superhero films are as valid as Scorsese films.
