Finally watched Never Rarely Sometimes Always. Very good movie that made me feel very heavy. The interview scene that inspired the title was the most overtly moving, but the early sequence at the pregnancy center was also hard to sit through in its own way (as a church person living elsewhere in PA).

“Who Is Arthur Chu?” is a fantastic, disturbing documentary. He must have let the director have a say over the final cut because it makes him look simultaneously pathetic and despicable

He seems like a genuinely terrible person. He was extremely abusive to his wife until she eventually left him.

They should let Arthur Chu host Jeopardy. Just give me a week of him stumbling through it while also being smug enough the berate the contestants

Questioning the feminism of women in film criticism who thought what she said and did was dumb and telling a black woman she's "on the side of a bunch of abusive white men" is shitty.

I'm gonna be real... I'm not that mad at Lexi.

She is often overly combative, & I obviously don't agree with her initial take, but like. I dunno. How do you expect someone who's been fucked over by Hollywood, harrassed plenty by randos, & been on a raw end of anti-Palestine bullshit to respond when she's getting blasted by film twitter for agreeing with someone else's bad movie take? Especially when she realized some of those people went after her after someone she apparently has prior bad blood with drew attention to her bad take. Especially when some of her replies are people making anti-Palestinian jabs at her & making fun of the projects she took after she got locked out of basically every other directing job.

Was making that one person a target for that one reply a mistake? Unless there's more context to that one case, yeah, of course! But, I ain't gonna be mad at someone with a solid track record for one bad misstep like that in the midst of that whole dumb shit storm.

...and, why are some people seeing what's going on & going, "hey, maybe I should jump into her replies at this specific moment to recommend some cinema for her to watch!" lol. Come on. Maybe I just know better 'cause I've gotten into an argument with her over a good faith comment before, yet ultimately ending up with her following instead of blocking me, lol. But, like, if what she's reacting poorly to is waves of bullshit, maybe don't add to that faceless mass? And, it's... just movies, lol, come on.

I don’t fault her for blocking me and lots of people are being shitty to her. If that’s all that was happening, fine. but she’s being shitty to people too. She (and that Walter guy) are basically saying women who think she’s being silly aren’t feminists, and she literally told Jourdain Searles, a wonderful critic with a staunchly leftist ideology who has put up with plenty of undeserved shit for being a black woman on Twitter, that she was “on the side of a bunch of abusive white men”. That’s shitty.

I think you are being overly deferential to her because you already knew and liked her before this. How do I expect someone to respond when they get slightly ratio’d for an obviously bad take that they obviously knew ahead of time would get them ratio’d? If they have been on Twitter for over a decade and have tens of thousands of followers, I’d expect them to ignore it, because as others have tried telling her, she knows that they can’t actually hurt her in any way. If anything, if she would not have continued doubling down, everyone would have forgotten about her initial tweet within about two days anyway. Her being so overly combative about it is exactly why this is so embarrassing to witness

And was making that one person a target for that one reply a mistake? Uh maybe at first, but then she doubled down on making it about him again, and again. She is consciously making it about him, a person she knows has no following or power of any kind, and even went so far as to contact the school he’s a student at as if he deserves some sort of reprimand for telling someone on the Internet to shut up, as if he did something so much more heinous. That’s not a “mistake” and yes you absolutely should be upset at anyone who does that lol

I didn’t say she was right. I said her response is understandable given the context & her background.

And, her response to that critic read more like an exasperated person being surprised that someone like Jourdain Searles would in this case be arguing from the same side as the abusive white men coming after her. Not that she’s dismissing her wholesale. Her mentioning having been tagged & deciding to mute the thread instead of (that I know of) blocking the critic feel to me like clear indicators of where she’s coming from.

I absolutely understand where she’s coming from and have some sympathy, but she’s been doubling down for two days. Her initial premise was ignorant and intentionally inflammatory, going after a dickhead college kid to the extent that she did was wrong, acting like any woman (or anyone) should automatically be on her side when she is in the wrong is wrong, and suggesting that those who disagree are automatically sexist or racist is ridiculous. I have sympathy to the extent that I saw two people tweet abhorrent stuff at her (and don’t doubt there’s more, though it makes her fixation in the “shut the fuck up” kid weirder), and that it’s got to be exhausting to be the main character of Twitter for something so stupid, but her refusal to acknowledge any missteps in her initial premise or how she’s handled the fallout is dumb. I like Lexi and think she’s got a ton of admirable qualities, she’s a very valuable voice, but cool people can be shitty too. She’s been in the wrong from the jump and is digging a deeper hole by doubling down and refusing to acknowledge any mishandling of anything that’s happened. It all just sucks.

There’s a difference between giving someone the benefit of the doubt because of her track record & siding with her ‘cause I have warm feelings about her or her work.

The fixation on that guy (unless there’s additional context, which I doubt there is about him in particular ‘cause she’d probably share it by now) is the least defensible part of this. But, I’m not defending it. I’m disappointed in that part. I just understand, contextually, how that happened.

And like... that mistake? It’s a misapplication of an online strategy that’s incredibly popular in certain online justice-minded circles. Pretty sure you can find versions of that cheered at times on in the politics & “accountability” threads on these forums. I don’t have it worked out quite in my head which extreme scenarios it’s justifiable in, but it all feels super gross to me! So, I’m not defending that as a decent act; I just find it hard to pin it on Lexi in particular when it’s a much bigger conversation than this one scenario.

I honestly agree with more of this post than I disagree with, but I can’t agree with the bolded (unless having Bad Movie Takes Online is the same kinda “wrong” as the other stuff going on). Her shittier tweets came after everything started blowing up.
