wonder if she hates Ida Lupino films.

Lexi is cool and has been able to navigate the business of Hollywood with laudable morals intact which is always worth commending but stuff like those tweets is such nonsense it drives me up a wall

Most old movies don't hold up but they have been forgotten to time. The ones that people still talk about are like that for a reason.

"most movies are racist and sexist" could apply to any era including today, the racism and sexism just adapted to the times. or got smart enough to not be overt about it.

Oscar Micheaux was a black filmmaker responding to the acclaim of DW Griffith's Birth of a Nation contemporaneously with his masterpiece Within Our Gates. Kenji Mizoguchi was making films about female sex workers in Japan in the 1930s. Ida Lupino transitioned from being an actress to a director whose first credited feature was about a female dancer diagnosed with polio, released in 1949. From their inception the history of cinema is full of non-white, non-male filmmakers, even in the Untied States. The generalization and closed-mindedness is staggering and uncharacteristic and puts a ceiling on what cinema can be.

Who is she addressing in her original tweet, anyway? Of course it is okay not to like black-and-white or old movies, and no one is really going to give the average person a hard time if that is their taste. However, if you are talking about a critic, a filmmaker, or someone who is serious about film you are going to be expected to have some knowledge, just as you would for literature or paintings of music.

I think she's going at some Emerson College student who tweeted "shut the fuck up" at her

oh I think it's response to the fervor over the guy with the "I don't watch movies made before 1975" rule

My boss is making me show The Best of Enemies to the students, so I am suffering through it to make a worksheet. The movie is just a bland Hallmark moment, but it is another film in a very short time period where Sam Rockwell plays a broad caricatured racist who sees the light. Why did he get consigned to so much trash? He used to be in a lot of good work.

Lexi Alexander joins Curt Schilling and the Hoarse Whisperer as the people I know of who have me blocked on Twitter. Unlike those two I actually followed and directly interacted with her (this one time). Bummer.

I am blocked by a bunch of Democrats. I almost never post on Twitter, and the handful of times I have it did not escape my tiny echo chamber. The Hoarse Whisperer is one of them. The funniest one is Arthur Chu, a guy who won Jeopardy and tried to leverage it into a public career.
