Everyone also tries to mimic the cadence of the Every Frame A Painting guy. But unlike him, they rarely ever have anything interesting to say.

The excessive amounts of “[Movie] EXPLAINED” videos are especially funny. I guess props to the guys who can profit from just explaining the plot of a movie/show that doesn’t completely spoon feed its audience

RLM has many of the same issues as most YT film critics, but their brand of cynicism and humor makes them stand out from the crowd of green screens.

someone I don't know, telling me what they think about a movie is not at all what I want in my life.

90% of the runtime of YouTube reviews are essentially just reading the Wikipedia synopsis plot with quips and "plot holes" thrown in. It's incredible, really.

I am never going to watch a video review in my life, that’s something I prefer written 10/10

Especially for music! Why would I listen to someone talk about the music when I can just listen to the music and see if I like it for myself

There is a gulf between the Plinkett reviews and garbage like Christ Stuckmann. Red Letter Media's Half in the Bag comes out pretty regularly and it is mostly just a conversation about movies with some notes and some light editing.

Maybe we will have to make a show together.

What makes a video essay intrinsically worse than a written review? A person could just be reading out loud what they wrote or would have written in the first place. While also providing clips to watch, and being easier to passively absorb than something you have to read lol

Stuckman, Jahms, almost anyone who has appeared on Collider can all be lumped into the same group and generally not worth the time. Half in the Bag is a large step above those, partially because they approach reviews with a similar style with a sense of self-awareness. I'll pop them on every now and then. But I eventually got tired of their approach. The Nerd Crew is probably the peak of their channel.

What makes Half in the Bag generally interesting is that their approach is based less on traditional film criticism but more on their own experience as DIY filmmakers. They approach issues that you rarely see brought up in "professional" reviews. I watch pretty much all of their work, even though most of the movies they review are ones I have no plans on watching.

The It Follows one gave me a headache. We are losing all ability to read ambiguity, shades of grey, and nuance.

I didn’t say it was intrinsically worse, I usually listen to music while I read articles, so that’s my preferred way of going about it.

but I’m also a fast reader so it’s easier for me to consume content that way

I looked up the full article and they list the car flying away in Grease because it was too unrealistic. I almost never laugh out loud when I read something but that is an all-timer.

Patrick Willems is solid though mostly covers comic book/comic book adjacent movies. Wisecrack’s style is grating but their content is good. But it seems most YouTube critics are covering Star Wars and comic book stuff and Pixar so the ceiling might be low because that’s all they watch

I don't know why something like What the Flick can't survive or be profitable. The overhead can't be that high.

what the flick is now the aforementioned breakfast all day. they’re great, and it helps that they aren’t primarily youtubers but experienced critics

to add to that, BfAD is really more a podcast than a youtube channel if anything

Wasn't What The Flick owned by another YouTube channel and they decided to restructure and that's why it was canceled?

Good to know it's still around under a different name, I'm gonna have to check that out.

They really should get a new name. If you Google "breakfast all day" you get McDonald's.
