Yes. Haven't rewatched 10 Cloverfield Lane since theaters but I liked it more than Cloverfield right away (like c'mon, John Goodman was so good in it), and I rewatched Cloverfield last year and it held up to me

They’re both okay but have some significant flaws

The only flaws to me are:

    1) poor character development in the first movie. But this is a chaotic monster movie, and the situation is far more interesting than spending a ton of time developing these characters

    2) the last few minutes of 10CL which I have no problem pretending didn't happen. You can even stop watching the movie at that point and it's still an effective ending just watching her leave the bunker

i admit the first one worked on me when i was 19 or whatever when it came out. every time i’ve tried to consider a rewatch it’s been horribly disappointing

10CL would be a decent movie without the shoehorned in connection to the original that completely take away from the movie. it’s a larger problem with hollywood now. directors can’t make survivalist thrillers without connection the original idea to one of the IP source materials they own the rights to

Really happy that Barack Obama picked Hubie Halloween as his favorite movie of the year

Obama watches a lot of the critically acclaimed and challenging works and still ended up as a monster. You'd expect at least slightly better politics.

Obama has the most boring and predictable NCAA bracket every year and therefore I cannot fathom his entertainment lists being anything different.

You can’t expect taste in high art to equate to good political views. See: basically all of recorded history

I’m 80% sure that the list is at least partially curated by others and he approves it and hasn’t seen/read everything on it

i'd actually imagine the books list to probably be mostly him. zero chance he watches all the tv and movies or listens to the music though.

not much has come close to First Cow for my favorite film of the year, but Vitalina Varela is up there. Both films use quiet and stillness masterfully, and the lushness of Vitalina Varela's cinematography in its darkness is unreal good.

There's so much I still need to see before I can even do a rough end of the year list. Giraffe, Nomadland, A Month of Single Frames, Circumstantial Pleasures, Boys State, the Woman Who Ran, Shirley, Another Round, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, Minari, the Cloud in Her Room, Mangrove, Lovers Rock, Black Bear, Time, Dick Johnson is Dead, the Inheritance, She Dies Tomorrow, I Was at Home, But..., Tommaso, Beanpole, it's overwhelming. With so few theatrical opportunities this year I focused a lot on pre-2020 stuff, particularly the 1920s-60s and world cinema. It's been great, but for 2020 stuff I've seen, after my current top 5-6 there's a bit of a drop off in quality/how strong I feel about the work.

"Let people enjoy things" is so insulting and condescending, but not to the person criticizing a piece of art, but to the person enjoying it. It treats them like a child.

I’m watching Ava on Netflix and it’s not that good but Colin Farrell needs to be in more stuff.

The villains really do carry all of the 90s Batmans. Arnold is normally such a stilted and awkward actor, but in his crazy Mr. Freeze makeup it’s like he finally found his true self

I remember hearing that Amazon apparently removed the scene in Avatar where they use the tails to fuck. Or the one where they do the same action to form a bond with animals. Whichever it is, they’ve removed the implication that the Na’vi are fucking the animals

To clarify, it'll make turning a commercial profit from illegal streaming a felony. It punishes those who run illegal streaming sites, not users.
