I was coming here to post that.

It would be funny if streaming is what kills the blockbuster. Streaming services can be very profitable with the mid-budget stuff but you aren't going to recoup those blockbuster costs without either raising the monthly fee or charging a premium like Disney did for Mulan.

I've been thinking about this since the WB announcement. It'll be quite hard to justify $200 million budgets for movies that aren't going to grow subscribers in significant ways. I could potentially see more stories that were destined for massive budgets and the big screen being reworked into limited-run series. Things that keep users around on a platform for multiple weeks as opposed to a seven-day trial period. The recent Disney announcements seem to indicate that studios are going to test that model.

Also makes sense that streaming platforms are getting rid of free trials as these movies start getting dumped on them

So many blockbuster movies lose their luster on the small screen as well. Without the big screen and sound system to pull you immerse you, they have little staying power.

I disagree tbh, I think watching it in 4K on my flatscreen is a lot sharper than a projector screen, which is enough to make me want to watch things at home

I looked up the budgets of Netflix films. The Irishman is the current leader with $160 million, which is huge but about half of the biggest films. They are letting the Avengers directors make something even bigger than that, so at some point we will see if there is an upper limit to what they streaming services will pay to make and/or purchase films.

Since you are not sharing revenue with theaters and you can cut down significantly on advertising, it might me easier to justify some expenses. It is probably similar to something like HBO, which often has one or two big shows that drive subscribers and then they are able to experiment on some other projects.

I haven't seen the Mandalorian, but it seems like most people who like Star Wars like it better than the films. They estimate it is about $15 million an episode. If three or four episodes are the length of a movie, you are essentially making a movie for $50 million dollars. An entire season costs half of one of the movies. That might make more financial sense for the streaming services, since a bad episode is less likely to turn people off of something than a bad film in a series.

I agree. No matter how good my TV is, to me it still doesn't beat the movie theater experience. Mostly due to outside distractions and what not. When I go to the movies I am immersed into the movie...and if the movie rules, then I'm rally immersed.

No matter how good a movie is at home...its not the same

Made it 45min in last night and then my edibles kicked in (I was doing an experiment) and I couldn't focus on the subtitles anymore.

Loved the setup though and can't wait to finish it this afternoon.

I wanted to tag you as soon as I saw it pop up but had a feeling that, of all people, you’d already know (I endorse your experiment for the record)

I’ll wait to share my thoughts until people have the chance to see it but I loved it so much
