The popularity of the Shawshank Redemption is bewildering. Were they all watching it with their dad on TNT?

 

A running joke with my friends is that I'm such a movie fan but have never seen Shawshank. I've seen parts, and I like King's writing, but I can't imagine it is the best film of all time.

 

Per Letterboxd, I've seen 122/250.

The top 250 is actually better than I expected. Would never have guessed as many older (pre-1970) / foreign films would be on it

who has seen Promising Young Woman? I'm interested but don't think I've heard much about it.

 

Not an explicit spoiler but:
I've read about the ending and it sounds pretty fucking horrific, haha. Obviously can't judge it based off of a clearly biased review, but what I read about did not sound like something i'd like

 

horrific in the sense of like... "horrifying to watch" or like "horrifically bad and ruins the movie"?

 

Hm, I mean depending on how it is portrayed, both? I'd consider reading about it (I think there's a thread on here where peopled talk about it) if you're curious
Again, it really all depends on how it plays out in the film.

 

I'm certainly interested.... I really like to go into movies knowing as little as possible, so I might just make the leap and give it a shot. The cast is so stacked that even if it's a trash movie, I would probably enjoy it

Kind of wild that Shawshank was already at #2 in 1996. Still don't think it deserves to be that high

 

hadn't heard of Proming Young Woman until just now, but I Googled it and Bo Burnham's name came up and I'm instantly interested

 

I only had heard of it because the soundtrack is pretty LIT, then I saw the cast list and was like.... damn I think I want to watch this

I saw it at Sundance last year. Great film.

Speaking of Sundance:
They're doing it online this year (obvi.) They're going to have some sort of streaming service or something. I haven't really looked into it too much yet since it's not until next month. Sounds like something you'd want to jump on though, so I'm giving you the heads up, in case you're interested.

 

It is a great documentary about how much of a self-destructive, narcissistic child the creator of Boondock Saints was/is.

I remember hearing about this years ago and completely forgot it existed. Going to have to check it out soon.

 

Definitely gonna look into that. I did a couple other online fests and they were great. Forced me to actually sit down and watch stuff. There's a Virtual Film Fests thread too btw.
