Were numbers for Mulan ever officially released? I remember seeing only speculative numbers based on app downloads or something like that.

You started out by saying that 4chan people were likely bombarding it to artificially inflate the score, the same way that they do the opposite for movies like Black Panther. It’s still not clear to me if you think that’s still what is going on or what. You agree that it’s shitty Oscar bait, but that just supports my point that there is likely little review bombarding going on, because people, even liberals (especially liberals!), tend to like shitty Oscar bait

I see where you're confused now. If you re-read those initial posts you'll notice I never claimed 4chan chuds specifically were boosting the score, artificially or not. I guess it's likely to some extent they might be. Many of the scores were probably authored by them, but I don't think everyone leaving hostile reviews on the internet are from sites like 4chan who keep up with underground memes, etc given how many liberal boomers, older chuds, karens, etc on Yelp alone also enjoy leaving angry reviews! So laying it all out, it's reasonable to doubt that they or similar ilk, wherever falling on the white spectrum of jerks, would find a movie like Hillbilly Elegy as unsettling to the stomach as Black Panther or TLOU2.

It's no mystery why user reviews for those are salt mines while those for the Hillbilly oscar bait one are not. Why/how this ended up being a debate is more confusing than any of my posts in here should be.

it sucks that this will lead to theaters declining, if not going extinct, and it stinks that this will lead to a decline in the quality of movies. uniformly awful decision for the industry, outside of it being a temporary good situation during COVID/pre-vax

I wonder how these streaming quantities quantify success for a film.

With a movie theater, it is easy; you have a film budget and you have the box office. With streaming, though, not all views are created equally; did someone watch it because they were bored or did they actively subscribe to your platform in order to watch it?

Something like Dune would probably have bombed at the box office, but it is the kind of movie that has a niche. That niche would not be enough to make its money back in a theater, but it is a niche that could provide a boost in streaming subscription revenue that you can point to in a board room and call a success. Long-term, people who might have been intimidated by Dune's history (long book and widely reviled original film) will watch it in the same it would have through a normal life cycle.

I really think Dune was/is going to still have a huge box office. It has like 30 million YouTube views for the trailer alone.

yeah, it was going to be huge in the (pre-covid) lack of any huge IP Star Wars/Marvel movie to fill the holiday slot

  11. Someone on Twitter supposed that the future of theaters may be something akin to roller skating rinks. They probably won't become completely extinct but will be relegated to more of a novelty experience.

I think the biggest factor to the decrease in box office performance really comes from repeat viewings. So many of the large successes come from long legs of the films, with people seeing the movies 2-3x. Since these films will only be showing one month on Max, then moving to theatres only, might be able to capitalize on the Word of Mouth exposure. Someone who watches Dune without knowing much, then loving it, then seeing it in theaters 3-4 weeks later may be a winning combo...but I have no idea how to measure that lol

I’d say it’ll be more like the opera or going to a play.

So did Tenet. It bombed at first, but eventually made it's budget back and then some. Bluray sales will also help. Worst case, maybe the first Dune can stay on screens long enough to ensure part two gets made.

Tbh I think this decision basically GUARANTEES part two gets made.

Like, as someone who lives in a major city with like six independent theaters within two miles, I’ll be fine. This is going to crush so many people who live in smaller areas though.

While this is likely the straw that broke the camel's back, COVID already destroyed indie theaters through at least mid-next year

So how many "major" streaming services are there now? Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, and Peacock? They invented cable television with extra steps.

  19. Those are the major ones, though I don't know how popular Peacock is at this point. Maybe Apple TV+ too? There's Tubi, which is free. Then smaller ones like CBS All Access, Shudder, Criterion, Mubi.

I don't even know how much normal cable costs, let alone the premium channels like HBO/Showtime/etc.

Streaming will also always be superior by virtue of no / limited commercials, plus the actual option to watch what you want. Can you imagine, in the year 2020, being at the whims of whatever a channel decides to show you? I am my own man.

I agree with this if you change the word streaming to torrenting.

And we've got Discovery+ (Discovery/TLC/HGTV/Food Network/etc.) and Paramount+ (CBS All Access + Film Catalog + Comedy Central + MTV + Nick) coming next year.
