Aaron Sorkin's continued career is a great exhibit of white male mediocrity rising above more talented people from disadvantaged groups.

aka younger white conservatives feeling nihilistic due to copium addiction. yep, checks out!

It doesn't, though. It is a different group than those who would see themselves in Hillbilly Elegy.

Hillbilly Elegy (the book) was adored by liberal outlets when it came out. People from the coasts/cities thought it was supposed to be a good way of gaining the perspective of the kind of poor/working class white person who supported Trump. I don’t think many of those people realized that JD Vance is a right wing freak selling them propaganda, because it is a memoir and not a manifesto.

This movie seems to be the most generic kind of Oscar bait, and again I believe they tampered down the actual politics of the guy behind it. Like if someone didn’t know the background source, they would probably think it’s mostly just a family drama. Or they could be the same kind of liberal who enjoyed the book and thinks the movie is again a way of seeing the perspective of a poor rural white person.

All of this is just to say: I don’t find it unreasonable to think that RT reviewers simply enjoy a shitty movie lol

Pretty much. Plenty of Democrats or apolitical people are going to enjoy movies like this. They flock to stuff like The Blind Side and The Help and Green Book.

I watched the trailer for it and was distracted by whatever was going on with Glenn Close's makeup. She doesn't look like a real person. It's up there with Tom Hardy in that Capone movie.

Good theaters rule. Theater chains like AMC make trying to defend the theatrical experience difficult.

I feel like the only studio that won't end up doing that is Disney. But that's because they will have bought most of the theaters by the end of this.

This claim seems like it would be difficult to parse out and quantify, but not sure. Do 4chaners troll low-income rural white people as much as POC, the LGBTQA community, etc?

The idea of educated progressives genuinely liking this movie is odd to say the least and reviews seem to reflect this. But obv rural conservatives and boomer liberals who watch the oscars might. It's also odd that info about the author being a corporate conservative had a reaction of surprise to anyone given how corporate and conservative the tone of the book and film are. It always seemed clear from the trailers alone what that movie is.

  13. Disney moved two of their bigger movies to the Disney+ this year.

I can see them moving Black Widow to that premier $30 thing again in 2021

I'm sure they'll take this approach for a few movies, perhaps most that are currently scheduled for Jan-June, but I can't see them moving their entire 2021 slate to this model if things are back to normal by the end of next summer.

I seriously doubt things will be back to normal by next summer, most likely will be a hybrid model until early 2022. A 1-year strategy like WB is taking is fantastic, especially with a burgeoning service like HBO Max

Amazing actor that he is, the fact that Tom Hardy was cast with all the fake-looking prosthetics instead of Glenn Fleshler who's career felt like it was building up to a Capone role is a damn shame.

I can't see movie theaters ever coming back to the strength they were; they were already declining as it is. People are getting used to getting movies on "release" through Netflix or Disney+ or whatever other platform they are using. There are purists out there who will fight to keep them alive, but with the rise of 8K TV's why would you want to get out of bed?

I really miss going to theaters. It’s something I would do frequently alone or with my parents. Hope they bounce back in some capacity

  20. I dunno - Disney made hella more money releasing Mulan through Disney+ than they would have through the theaters

if they announced today that they were going to put Black Widow on their service for $30 everyone would do it

Being an "educated progressive" doesn't mean you don't fall for generic schlock. All of the big awards shows show this pretty clearly.

How is it clear from the trailer that the movie is conservative or corporate? I just watched it again and it comes off like just a generic family drama about a mom that has addiction problems or whatever. You're not even told where they live
