It’s funny because you’ve both been complaining about people in the politics thread.

The "let people enjoy things" argument has never made sense for a variety of reasons.

The most obvious is that no one is stopping anyone from enjoying anything. They are not sending squad cars to your house to confiscate your copy of Cars 2. It is also important to realize that a minority opinion does not mean it is invalid; I have heard your candy corn critiques and am eating them right now anyway. On a philosophical level, people are putting too much of their identity into brands and products, so that when said brand is criticized, they feel criticized.

On a deeper level, the argument tends to come from people who are enjoying multi-billion dollar products, not niche ones. Culture and society is making it infinitely easier for you to "enjoy things", while others have to find a DVD rip with hardcoded Korean subtitles.

It is especially counter-productive on an Internet forum that depends on conversation; if we are to like what we like and be silenced for our criticisms, what is there to discuss? Will the lines just be between the "I liked it" crowd and the "I loved it" crowd?

I mention the unpopular opinions thread partly in jest because we have had to reckon with "The Resident Evil movies are masterpieces", "Great Gatsby is a good movie", and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall is the single best movie ever made" in a rapid succession that can cause people to become dizzy. More seriously, though, a lot of the best discussions have been in that thread, with people passionately defending their esoteric views. It is not all "X is overrated", either; there have been some passionate defenses that can add a new perspective that people have not thought of before.

 

I forgot Steve said FSM was the greatest movie ever made. That was crazy.
