If it keeps him from using resources to make a new movie, we all benefit.

    Well, no.

But I'll tell ya what, movie snobs certainly want you to believe that.

But it's fine, The Get Down proved that the snobs don't deserve him anyway. What an amazing show that would have been lauded as groundbreaking if it was the exact same show without his name attached.

A few years ago we were teaching the Great Gatsby and the department chair made us show his version of it. It is a cliche at this point to say the book is better than the movie, but the contrast was about as clear as you could get. It also gave us that awful meme of Gatsby holding up the drink, with people superimposing text that completely misses the point of who Gatsby was.

The Get Down was great but I'll credit that more to his ability to delegate/assemble a staff.

I have never heard of The Get Down, but if it is great it does not matter who directed it.

Um the minimizing of a director's credit in his own tv series??

I wasn't doing that. I was responding to your theory that people would suddenly like the show more if everything stayed the same but his name was not attached.

My point was that the inherit bias against Luhrhman blinded a lot of people from watching the show at all and/or praising it, proving it does matter who directed it

Who does this? There are plenty of examples of filmmakers receiving praise after a long career of being dismissed, just like there are plenty of examples of filmmakers receiving criticism after a long career of praise.

Also, it isn't as if he has some sort of Brett Ratner-like reputation.

Tbh, I learned that Luhrman did the Get Down approximately three minutes before my last post here. I dont think it was his presence that killed the show. Netflix jumping the gun and being dumb

Is it possible that The Get Down was just basically not properly promoted by Netflix? I had never even heard of it until this thread just now lol

  19. A couple decades late to this, but I watched Platoon for the first time last night. It's very good.

Oh, Netflix totally dropped the ball on it and kinda let it die, but again my point is that it's a great show that has Baz Luhrman stylization ALL OVER it. Anyway, well worth a watch for anyone who is interested in it.

Gatsby is not great and the music is very bad but I get what he’s going for and can explain it to my students that way.

I’ve had to watch it 4 times a year for the last 4 years

A lot of my students didn't realize that there were no actual witches in The Crucible until they saw the movie version.

I generally appreciate what Baz is going for and rarely feel he accomplishes it

I do like his Romeo + Juliet
