@brandon_260 what should I watch tonight? Aquarius, Graduation or Aferim? Might try bang out two if the mood is right

Haven't seen Aferim yet. Aquarius is my second favorite of the year, so that's my clear pick. Graduation is fine but it's my least favorite of Mungiu's work.

Curious to hear what you think. I actually liked Graduation a lot more right when I saw it but soured on it more over time.

Yeah! It's one of my favorite film related websites. The community is kind of blah but it's the best tool around for logging films, keeping a watchlist and list making.

I'll admit I felt it dragged just a smidge in the middle but I loved it, the lead was fantastic and I throughly loved her character, the final scene nearly had me cheering. I really liked the commentary on modernization and her flippant dismissal of it in the interview early on. It was a theme from the onset but her approach to it was far more personal than a debate on vinyl vs. digital could be. Just some stray thoughts and poor man's analysis, thankful for the rec!

I don't know how it translates on the subs for the version that's out there, but there's a line in the film about if you don't like something it's old, if you do it's vintage, which I think is a pretty brilliant summary of a lot of what is being dealt with in the film. I agree, the lead is absolutely fantastic, one of the best performances of the year. I felt a bit less empathy towards the character the second time around, because clearly she is in a place of privilege that the other former inhabitants of the Aquarius couldn't afford. But I think there's a fair balance of keeping a sense of sympathy for the character and exposing her stance as a selfish one. And the ending! I didn't really know where or how the film would close of but it really hits the mark there.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it! I feel like it's a bit of a tough sell based on premise and Kleber Mendonça Filho not being a widely recognized director yet, even on the festival circuit, but I've only seen positive reactions from those that I have seen it.

Yeah, that pretty much nails it honestly (the quote was intact in my version, though occasionally spotty). I felt like I was rooting for her rebellion but also questioning the nature of her defiance and what it stemmed from. Obviously the film seems to acknowledge our relationship to the material but I felt like it was also probing her stubborn response and what illicits it. Caught between a worthwhile pursuit to uphold heritage and an unwillingness to adapt. I'll definitely be thinking about it. Will also add Neighboring Sounds to my watchlist, a brief search yields very good reviews.

    Starting in on Graduation now.

Gremlins is goat. Prefer the sequel though. It has still one of the scariest jump scares ever imo
