Also isn’t that exactly what Disney did with Lord and Miller on Solo? Gave them creative freedom, then didn’t like what they were doing, and replaced them with a veteran yes man?

Been watching so many golden age sitcoms lately.

NewsRadio, Wayans Brothers, Drew Carey Show...

Maybe it's the nostalgia talking but all those 90's/2000's sitcoms shit all over current multi-cam stuff. (Big Bang/2 Broke Girls/etc.)

My friend had them all on a hard-drive which he gave to me a while back. I've had them in my library forever. Don't think there's a streaming service in Australia that has them, which sucks.

Hopefully Daniel Day-Lewis comes out of retirement to play one of the students. You know he would be the best one.

Wonder what the turnaround is going to be for this. If they start in February it probably won’t be ready for next winter, but they aren’t going to want to release a PTA film outside of awards season. We might be looking at a 2-year wait for this :(

I think the design change for Sonic set kind of a dangerous precedent. I’ve been seeing a ton of comments applauding them and saying studios should listen to the fans more. Yeah, the original design sucks but I don’t like the idea of fans dictating how movies should be.

Honestly that would only ever happen with movies based on large/pre-existing IP’s, almost all of which don’t need to be made in the first place

As long as they don’t fuck up Mario I’m fine

Agree with this 100%. Can lead to very dangerous territory.

It already happened with Mass Effect 3. Fans are dumb as hell and creatives should stand up for their work if they have conviction in their artistic vision. Now, the question of how much of an artistic vision there is in the live action Sonic the Hedgehog movie is debatable, but the fact that Sonic looks better now isn’t. I agree the precedent is alarming but this specific movie and situation seems ultimately harmless.

100% on creatives standing up for their work.

The case of of Sonic is ultimately harmless, yes. The problem in today's social media climate where everyone can have an instantly viewed opinion is that mass disagreement gets traction easily. Although like you said, essentially harmless...ie: the Remake The Last Jedi campaign, calls to remake the GoT finale, etc, it can be a problem where angry fans are given an inch and then choose to take a mile.

An example would be Sonic's design gets remade, win for the fans. The fans then call for Tails and Knuckles to be in the film, then threaten a boycott if it doesn't happen. I know this is all spitballing, but again, I wouldn't put scenarios like this past pissy fanboys.

Properties as big as that cater to fan expectation so much already. The Force Awakens was made entirely with fans in mind, and winning them over after the reception of the prequels. They’re more commercial enterprises than artistic films. And at some point few productions are going to be like “fuck, we already put x hours and labor into redesigning Sonic, now they want Tails, better redo the whole movie”. They want to introduce beloved aspects that please fans over the course of multiple films (eg, Joker tease in Batman Begins, featured in Dark Knight, the Raimi Spider-Man movies continual introduction of famous villains, etc).

Yes, the precedent is bad and fans are too entitled in our current climate. But I have more faith in most directors/writers/producers to hold strong in the face of that (Rian Johnson, for example) than I care about the Sonic crew redesigning a bad design.
