this looks better than expected I guess, Danny Trejo playing Boots and Benico Del Toro playing Swiper is amazing

I have seen the movie at least ten times (for work), and all I can name is Jake Sully.

I know Jake Sully cause there is an episode of SModcast entirely about Avatar and Kevin Smith’s impression of Zoe Saldana saying, “No, Jake Sully!!” is forever burned into my brain

I know Jake and I think Zoe Saldana was Nefertiti, no that was an Ancient Egyptian queen but something like Nefertiti

just everything about Avatar making no impact but James Cameron thinking it needs half a dozen sequels a decade later is hilarious

When I used to teach World History we showed Avatar as part of our unit on imperialism, and I was so bored to tears. There is the military guy, Giovanni Ribisi, and Susan Sarandon, then the girl from Star Trek is an alien.

I am a lot happier with the films I show for U.S. History (Paths of Glory, Grapes of Wrath, Saving Private Ryan, Selma).

I wouldn’t say the movie that made more money than anything else ever and stepped the 3D game up substantially didn’t make any impact.

I've never seen avatar. I've seen some of it but the person I watched with kept reciting all these stats about the records it broke and behind the scene stuff and I didn't care so I left.

Yeah I think the point has been proven very well by this thread already. The cultural impact is, “Oooh pretty! Lol look at the cat hair sex!” and that’s it.

Yeah the 3D was cool at the time but Avatar isn’t even close to as ubiquitous as Star Wars or any comic book movie or whatever. It barely moves the needle in terms of cultural significance.

Avatar is the only movie I’ve ever seen that getting impossibly high didn’t improve whatsoever

I agree about Star Wars but definitely disagree about any comic book movie. The thing made over $2 billion a decade ago without 18 movies leading into it as a massive build up.

idk man i see nerds arguing about whether or not iron man 2 is better than captain america all the time. i forgot avatar existed until this convo happened.

Marvel movies are a dime a dozen and don’t really have any kind of breakthroughs in filmmaking like Avatar did.

no argument to any of that. people are still talking about marvel movies though lol

Sure, but those movies are still coming out every four months. And for a movie with supposedly no cultural impact, I still see Avatar talk quite often considering it came out almost a decade ago. Right now, for example.

The only time I ever see Avatar mentioned is in conversations exactly like this.

something can be impressive from a tech standpoint and still be dogshit

The plot is boring as hell and has been done to death in other movies, but from a technical point of view it was astounding and showed what true 3D filming and viewing could be. And if the rumors are true, glasses-less 3D for Avatar 2 could be even more impressive.

For all it did for 3D, the fad came and went just like it did before. It just isn't a pleasant experience for most people.
