She was my least favorite sibling as well, but I still loved the whole cast. That show was melodramatic junk food for me.

the mere fact that Scientology was brought into existence so recently makes me think you’ve gotta be a special kind of crazy to believe in it

Haha, yeah I agree, but I think that’s a pretty simplified version of it.

    Full disclosure I know scientologists

At least for them it seems to be more about finding a community and feeling like you belong, I don't know how much they actually believe

  18. I went ahead and finished the second season of The Leftovers. It suffers some of the same pitfalls as Westworld in that it thinks it's smarter or more profound than it actually is--which is fine; I enjoy Westworld regardless, and I enjoyed this as well. My biggest gripe with the first season is that it seemed to treat the POC characters rather unfairly, namely Wayne and especially Christine. Yes, all the characters are flawed and complex, that is undoubtedly one of the show's strengths, and bad things happen to basically everyone, so that's not what I'm referring to when I say it's unfair. I'm fine with Wayne being a (potentially) false prophet because that, like the rest of the series, explores belief and faith, but his whole Asian fetish--and subsequently, Christine's entire plotline--I am not okay with, at all. Also, it seems like they both pop in and out of the story only for the benefit of someone else's character development, never their own. I thought the second season opening with a black family was a sign of correcting course, but even they are never truly the focus. John's family is only there to mirror Kevin's. Both families are fractured at the beginning, but they don't end up the same way. At the very end of the season, John enters his home and we are supposed to doubt his family is there. Kevin enters his, and everyone he cares about is there, a bunch of white faces, and it's clear who we're supposed to be rooting for. Westworld is better in this regard because we have Bernard, Maeve, and Akecheta to root for. From what I've seen, I think HBO as a whole may have a bit of a diversity problem. I literally had to watch the most recent season of Fresh Off the Boat as a palate cleanser in between seasons of The Leftovers because my previous HBO shows as well--the first seasons of The Sopranos, Veep, Big Little Lies, and True Detective--were so overwhelmingly full of white faces. I mean, I guess it's fine, I'm not going to stop watching The Leftovers now since there's only one season of eight episodes left. Carrie Coon alone is enough of a reason for me to keep going. It's just adamantly clear that it's lacking in something I look for in shows nowadays, but otherwise the quality is good, so.

I started watching The Americans, and I can't take Margo Martindale seriously because of her role in BoJack Horseman.

Finally saw Django Unchained and was disappointed. I’m not a big Tarantino fan, so I wasn’t expecting much, but it didn’t do much for me at all. Most of the acting was either bad or over the top and it felt weird turning something as terrible as slavery into a movie without a message. The few things I liked about it just weren’t enough to overcome all the bad parts.

    Gonna watch Hateful Eight next.

Hateful Eight was great. I’d say it’s his second or third best behind Inglourious Basterds and Pulp Fiction.
