Final Destination on track to make $50 million this weekend. Pretty huge couple of months for theaters. Really feels like “Sinners” broke the dam from the drought they were experiencing.

The Final Destination series has been gone enough to make people nostalgic for it, especially the first two movies, and it is the kind of film enjoyed best in a crowd.

Just the other day there was a story of a log coming off a truck and going through a windshield and the comments made it clear we almost all thought the same thing.

 

It was a blast in the theater

 

In high school I was waiting on the street at like 4am for a friend to pick me up so we could do mushrooms and watch the sunrise and a bat flew into the side of my head, and instead of taking it as a bad omen or getting a rabies shot I did the mushrooms anyway

 

We used to throw mulch in the air at my friend’s house to watch the bats fly down. It was very dumb.

 

The bats here are huge you can hear their giant wings flap, they make cackling sounds too and love fruit.

 

You guys have those kinda cute dog looking bats. We got the tiny demon looking ones.

Was also reminded by the box office report that the movie “IF” came out almost exactly a year ago and that truly is a movie I don’t think exists, much like imaginary friends.

 

Even my kids don’t want to watch IF.

 

I am grading my Dazed and Confused response questions, and one of my students said "I liked the film, it was a cool movie to watch. It was all over the place though it didn't seem to have any plot or reason. It kind of felt like brain rot but I didn't mind watching it."

 

Less pearl clutching in these responses than last semester, where kids were saying they didn't like the movie because of the freshmen hazing or because Wooderson was "weird"

 

Yeah there seems to be a bit of a shift on that this year. Less concern about moral grandstanding.

 

Wait I just read they're remaking Anaconda as a horror comedy starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd and it's coming out this Christmas? What the fuck.

This year there were more "the movie was confusing" comments, which I don't understand. I have seen a huge uptick in kids simply not being able to sit and watch a movie for 80 mins.

 

I am pretty sure I have told this before, but when I show Saving Private Ryan they are completely engaged with the combat scenes but then they ignore everything else. A lot of kids have told me they just don't watch movies at all because they can't pay attention.

 

It just doesn't make sense. The original is entertaining because of how campy it is due to budget constraints (like just reversing footage of a boat to have it go backwards on film), getting a cast that's just on the verge of hitting it big, an unhinged performance by Jon Voight and playing everything straight. That can't be recreated in a big budget movie.

 

The second one has some minor pleasures. The lead character has a Southern accent that fades as the film goes on.

 

I think it's more tropic thunder than an actual reboot, some guys having a midlife crisis decide to go to the Amazon because Anaconda is their favorite movie
