I cant speak to Mad Men cause I haven't seen it, but I feel this. It can be hard to watch shows like that because they're too real and if u just get all angry and worked up it's hard to actually enjoy the show

Yep. It’s always been an issue to some degree but now that I need entertainment to be an escape even more than I would have say 5 years ago, my sensitivity is super heightened.

I’m also over the entire genre of painting some horrible man as “tortured” to excuse his behavior. Maybe a decade ago I would have put Don with Greg House or Ben Linus and wanted to baby him, but now I just find him exhausting.

  3. I kind of feel like this already watching Christine on The Leftovers. I read ahead to see if her story gets any better. It doesn't seem to. So disgusting. I'm enjoying everything else about the show so far so I'll reserve judgement until I actually see all her episodes, maybe it's executed in such a way that isn't super gross.

Tbh I've felt the same way about Mad Men as @EASheartsVinyl.

Technically, yes, it is an incredibly well done show. The production design is pretty much near flawless and I definitely feel fully immersed within that world bc of the costumes, sets, and general design. That said I do feel like the content itself doesn't work for me. Having to deal with (and see) sexism, racism, and other discrimination in the real world, 50 years after this show was set, makes it a hard watch that I've never been able to truly enjoy. If I felt like it did more to subvert these tropes then yeah, maybe, I'd be more willing to sit down with it.

But idk!! I love Christina Hendricks and Jon Hamm but just can't gel with the show. I'll still try again because hey tastes change but after like three or four different tries it doesn't seem like the show for me.

I have side eyed John hamm since those hazing stories came out and idec that he was young, anyone should know not to do that. Like it's just something that crosses the line too much for me to be like ~but growth

As someone whose fiancee works with student organizations in higher education... I can confirm that Greek life is extremely scary, damaging and is honestly insane the things that still happen in 2018

I'm so glad Greek life wasnt prominent at my college. If my rm wasnt in a sorority I wouldnt have even known we had Greek life. And I don't think they played around cause she got kicked out cause she did a standard drinking game with a pledge/freshman and they considered that hazing.

Ooooof hazing is a horrible thing and I hadn't heard about this (but will investigate).

I will say that when I express adoration for any celeb it's like 99% of the time it's in reference to their professional work -- putting trust into celebrity isn't a great idea!!

Ugh I don’t know anything about him and hazing, that really sucks. I’ve hated the whole idea of Greek life for such a long time and I also can’t believe how little has changed within the culture or how acceptable they are.

I appreciate y’all letting me vent about Mad Men too. I kind of missed the boat to talk about it as a pop culture moment and when something is always in a conversation about being the “best ever” it’s kind of daunting to disagree.

I look at it all the same way as when I watch something like 12 Years a Slave. Horrific, disgusting, and heinous shit and hard to watch, but if it’s historically accurate and well made, it can be powerful.

Of course, this is coming from a white male, so I could be way off base so I’ll apologize if that’s the case.

  13. Halfway through the first season of The Leftovers already. This is the fastest I've gone through an HBO show since starting Westworld, so clearly it's held my interest. I'm also finding quite a few things that I'm really disgusted by along the way. Wayne's Asian harem, and by extension Christine's pregnancy, plus the Indian guy at the cleaner's--this show is really shitty to anyone who isn't white. Also, Gladys' murder felt unnecessarily drawn out for shock value. I'm going to finish the first season, but after that, depending on how things turn out, I might be done with this show.

Just finding the misogyny present in Mad Men grating and unpleasant is a more than fair critique for finding it hard to watch, and I get when that is a block for someone when watching something or trying to care about something. But Mad Men is so rich in what it ends up exploring, it explores the evolution of masculine and feminine identities in the culture shift of the sixties, it's basically partly an adaptation of Betty Friedan's Feminine Mystique and a mediation on the hole capitalism creates in one's soul. While the more blatant sexism and racism are certainly part of the period setting, it's doing a lot with them that's more than just a surface level display of "look at how sexist and racist people used to be", and the arcs of characters like Peggy, Joan, Sally, and Betty wouldn't be as profound if we didn't experience the totality of everything they experience from the beginning of the show to the end.

It's embarrassing how much gets pushed aside simply because Greek alumni donations fund the schools so much

  20. Finished the first season of The Leftovers. I liked a lot, but also found a few bits didn't sit well with me. I heard it only gets better from here, but I'm in no rush to continue and am not entirely sure if I will.

  21. Season 2 is incredible. Totally recommend you watch it, it's basically nothing like Season 1 and is nuts.

Season 1 was my favourite, 2 & 3 are way different. A lot of that show didn't work for me but I appreciate how weird and different it was. It's never boring, lol.
