I gave up on Westworld.

 

Same here. It's such a chore to get through with little to no reward.

 

Lastnight I finally figured out how to save other peoples lists on Letterbox'd after wishing it was a feature since I started using it over a year ago...... haha

 

How?

 

thank god i'm not the only one who didn't know! haha!

1. Click on the list you want to save
2. Scroll to the bottom of the list and click the heart (like) button
3. Go to your profile
4. Scroll down and click on Likes
5. At the top of that list, click the Lists button
6. Ta da!

 

I also dropped westworld half way through this season.

 

Welp, that didn't take long. There's apparently not a lot of Sharp Objects to catch up on. So uh, I started The Leftovers.

First impression of the pilot: this is relevant to my interests. I said the same thing about Lost and then dropped it three seasons in. Lots of people recommended The Leftovers in here, though, iirc. I guess I'll see how this goes.

 

I liked The Leftovers a lot, but nowhere near as much as a lot of people online seemed to.

Solid show and I recommend it, but not elite crazy tier like it's made out to be.

A martial arts tournament on an island to investigate a crime lord is a cool concept but without a charismatic lead like Bruce Lee I don’t see this being anything special.

I’m watching Mad Men for the first time after putting it off forever and it’s as infuriating as I expected it to be and more. Not enjoying it nearly as much as most other highly recommended shows because every episode raises my blood pressure to dangerous levels. I was hoping to binge through it but I can only take a couple at a time.

I’m really loving Sharp Objects but wish I had waited to start it to avoid the old-school TV watching agony. I keep thinking I’ll watch the next one and remembering it doesn’t exist yet.

 

What do you find infuriating?

 

The unrelenting misogyny and almost total lack of characters to identify with or root for. By the start of season two the only people I care about are Robert Morse, Betty, Joan, and sometimes Peggy.

 

The misogyny and racism in the show is awful but it's accurate to what that time period and industry was all about. I could see that being a hard thing to get past if it bothers you though.

As far as rooting for the characters, every person ever has flaws, some worse than others, but at some point I'm confident you would be rooting for the majority of the characters at some point in the series. This show captures how awful people can be redeemed and that's just one thing I love about it.

It's not offering a judgement of any of this, just a window into that time period and I think it's perfect.

 

I plan to keep watching it, but I live with that experience every day of my life and the show hasn’t told me anything about how terribly women are treated that I don’t already know firsthand. Seeing it from characters that are supposed to be protagonists also does not help my enjoyment at all, or the fact that so much of their pain is used to fuel Don’s story forward. Plus I honestly don’t think I’ve hated a fictional character since Umbridge more than I do Pete. Dude is the worst.

I do love a good period piece though, and some of my favorite shows and films have used similar aesthetics or place in the past to comment on current life, but most of those have some kind of relief from the awful to help it along.

 

That sounds like a tough thing to sit through, so I hope you enjoy it more if you do end up completing it. It's funny you mention Pete though, I think he ends up being one of the most sympathetic and dense characters on the show. Pretty sure he ends up being my favorite even though I couldn't stand him at first.

 

Oh god there is no way on earth.

 

If anything, I think you'll at least understand why he is the way he is.

 

I mean, that’s not really hard to figure out as it is. Lol.

 

How far are you into the show? And what's your interpretation of him and his characteristics? Just curious.

 

It’s true. I hated Pete at the beginning and loved him by the end.

I’m like two or three into season two. Rich, underwhelming son who is just smart enough to know that he only has what he does because of his family. Classic sexist jerk with an extra dose because he married a woman who has her own status and isn’t dependent on him. General weasel.

 

Interesting.

They delve much more into his psyche and past as the show goes on. I'd love to hear what you think of the show, and him in particular, as you get through the seasons.

 

Will do! I’m sure I have a very different perspective than a lot of people who are super into the show.
