Has anyone ever gone to jail for leaking a movie?

Idk but I’m sure WB could sue them or put them in court long enough for financial ruin

Ok but have they ever done it?

    Whom would risk it? Whom?

To what extent can you claim damages? You had no plans to release it and they're giving it away.

That’s actually a good point. If the studio has publicly said they’re not releasing it then

If you write off the film for tax purposes you shouldn't keep copyright.

only example i can think of re: someone releasing a film against the studio's wishes is someone leaking The Sweatbox (that documentary Sting's wife made about the making of The Emperor's New Groove that Disney didn't want to release). idk if there were any legal repercussions.

Wouldn’t be a criminal offense, just a civil lawsuit

I'm not asking for the entire legal history, I'm asking if the thing we are talking about has ever happened once.

I'll send you a movie I'm working on, you can leak it, then I'll sue you and we'll have an answer

Can't you just forget your flash drive at Starbucks and then "someone" picks it up? It is the perfect crime.

Yes, but this is why each copy is watermarked with the person's name who has the copy, probably a big huge watermark

In theory, yes, but in practice it's very obvious to tell which portions of the picture are generated vs native and you can very quickly decipher what the text used to say

What if three boys standing on top of each other wearing a raincoat "attacked" someone with a copy and they leaked it?

for some laws. if you acted with enough disregard for the flash drive that it was in the position to be forgotten in a public place, stuff like that isn't typically ignored.
