My mom is gonna be so excited. This is 100% a mom movie.

 

Looking forward to this doc. Likely will be picked up by a major streamer at Sundance.

 

No Other Land covers a lot of what we have seem over the last year and a half, but the narrative around it makes it a vital watch.

 

Near the end of the film they show the Israeli army destroying a water well to essentially force the people off the land. Once they are gone the settlements are built pretty quickly, and the Palestinians are forced more and more into urban areas, which makes it much easier to kill civilians in the bombings. It makes you feel guilty for inaction.

 

i'd love to watch it, but i'm not sure how to do so here in the US

 

There is a version out there, but then you have to hunt for good subtitles. It felt like being back in 2009.

update: the one i found surprisingly has English subtitles, lol

 

I have a pretty decent copy with good subtitles on my Plex if anyone wants to watch it, DM me. I'm probably going to check it out tonight.

Has anyone seen From Ground Zero? How does it compare?

 

what exactly does everyone mean re: good subtitles? is it a translation/time sync thing or is it difficult to find English subtitles altogether?

 

The copy I had didn't have English subtitles at all. I want to say the .srt file was Portuguese but I'm not sure. I found subtitles on a third party site.

Subtitles used to be such a crapshoot. A lot of times they would start too soon or too late, but you could edit that. The real problem was when they went too fast or too slow so that after about fifteen minutes you wouldn't even be in the same scene. You had to figure out the approximate rate that it was off and then go into settings and try to adjust the speed. It was like doing advanced math. The last few years they have almost always been good. The biggest problem now is when the film has subtitles as part of the film and then they overlap weird.

 

yeah, it looks like the one i found came with both English and Portuguese SRT files. i'm hopeful they'll turn out alright. but yeah, hardcoded subtitles overlapping with file-side captions are annoying.
