On topic Anora handled phones so well. No ugly sms overlay, the great writing let us know exactly what was happening on the phone and never felt like it was written as a work around, no weird coincidences disabling characters from using them to solve problems and their inclusion even made certain scenes better. 10/10 church scene.

For the record I was wondering if PTA was ever going to do another film set in the present, cause I still really love Magnolia and PDL. Not sure if his new one is set in the past or not

there are rumors over a book it's possibly an adaptation of that, if true, would be set in the 80s with reagan as a backdrop but it seems to go back and forth over whether its an adaptation of that or something else.

Wes Anderson hasn't made a movie set in the present in what 20 years, technically Isle of Dogs is in the future

Period films are perfectly fine, but there is an additional responsibility in trying to say something about the world we live now that more and more filmmakers seem to be shying away from.

Most great works of period fiction function as commentaries on contemporary times.

Yes, but there is something going on with filmmakers not wanting to deal with smartphones and the way we have changed communication.

I agree, partially I think a lot of filmmakers feel like it’s difficult to make visually compelling, partially I think they’re scared with how fast that sort of technology moves now that the film would end up almost immediately dated. I would hope insightful, forward thinking filmmakers would understand how to balance all those elements.

I think a lot of it comes from how differently new technology has been adopted across generations. Some of these directors are of an age of people who still mail checks to pay bills so how do you make a movie about male friends who communicate by playing online games together or sending memes? It goes against so many of the basic rules of setting the scene that have always existed. Teenagers especially don't see the lines between digital and in-person communication. How do you make a big messy breakup scene when people do it via text?

I think a movie set in the present could simply not acknowledge the existence of smartphones at all and no viewer would even notice their absence

Yeah it’s more noticeable when they announce why they wouldn’t use a phone. My gf was watching some Netflix show and the lady said several times she flew out to met the person as a favor to the president instead of calling.

Decision To Leave did a great job with communication/phones and had some cool phone pov shots.

Looks like the bids for the new Sundance city are down to three: Salt Lake City, Boulder, and Cincinnati.
