I would imagine 99 percent of people didn't know that. People who will admit to reading Oscar prediction sites have a skewed perception of what the average person knows about voters skipping The Brutalist.

The Oscars "don't matter" in that they don't truly determine the great films, as we have seen over the years with movies what didn't win becoming more recognized than those that did. However, they absolutely do "matter" in that they affect what types of movies get financed, the level of budget they receive, the cast and crew that will get hired, the tone of the film, the development of artistic and plot developments in the film, when the film gets released, and how much exposure the film will get to the general public. They have power over the film industry in the way that the Grammys or similar awards simply don't have. Half of the year, from the summer film festivals into February, is set up around them. To complain about them is to care about the way the movie industry works.

Also imagine that you put years of your life and your heart and soul into making something and someone is like you can't get two or 3 hours of my time even though that's my one job

those prediction sites are good for giving you extra time to see the presumed nominees. Putting any more weight into them than that is weird

The average twenty-ish film buff on Letterboxd with school and a part-time job puts more effort into seeing the movies than those people do.

if you think winning best director or winning best picture can't effect the kind of movies that get made, idk what to tell ya. the oscars can be goofy. they can award and prop up utter bullshit while ignoring great movies and do so every year. they also establish directors, writers and actors that your average person doesn't know about until they hear what wins these awards. i don't think it's as complicated or nefarious as you guys constantly make it out to be lol

I think it’s fine to question and critique and goof on outdated/misguided structures like award shows on an internet message board. But I’m sorry anyone wasted time reading this, I’m done.

I have a question for the thread since it is active:

When you use the “!!” reaction in a text, what meaning are you trying to convey?

As a voting member of the Critics Choice Awards - an awards show truly no one cares about - I can say that unless your job is a film critic - like you’re logging 40+ hours a week watching and writing about movies, it’s damn near impossible to watch all the submissions if you have a full-time and other commitments.

The movies are doled out very quickly starting in. November and you only have so much time to watch them, so you have to prioritize. On top of that, studios send swag to you to try and convince you on what you SHOULD be watching (I have an “Emilia Perez” poster that has as much use to me as Ron Livingston’s character in “Office Space”’s 40 subscriptions to Vibe.) I feel terrible for the smaller studios that don’t have the budget to do that. Most kind of give up. It’s a very dumb process, but makes for some fun discussions.

Netflix used to spend so much. Now, they just target a movie or two.

Thank you! My friend group uses it for “wow” or “what the fuck” but every other person I know uses it to mean “I agree”, which is baffling to me. The thumbs up exists already

Better Man was shockingly great. Lots to love. The Rock DJ, She’s The One and Angels sequences were expertly done.

Could have done with it wrapping up a bit quicker. My Way went on too long.

Also how many Americans are confused by the skinless version?

Even before all his controversies, I’ve said Cloverfield would be so much better if TJ Miller wasn’t in it.

Reading the tweets about Tremors is really interesting. Almost all the changes, and choices made behind the scenes were pretty smart and thoughtful(?) considering it was the 90’s. Letting the actor change his characters nationality to his own, Reba being concerned about shooting indoors and her hearing so they had everyone use ear protection, and having an animal rights person on set for a horse scene. Just surprised I guess
