Toy Story 1-3 are all perfect.

 

Toy Story 4 fine. Perfectly good epilogue for Woody and Bo.

honestly, if 4 had 5's plot, i wouldn't be upset because i genuinely like the idea of assessing the obsolescence of toys compared to technology (a homemade toy gaining sentience juxtaposed against one toy feeling unloved is somewhat stupid and derivative of prior films).

the problem isn't necessarily that they're making more movies - it's that the past two of them have been marketed as swan songs for some or all of their characters. idk what kind of mental gymnastics they're gonna pull to get the gang back together, but it's feeling a bit "boy who cried wolf" resurrecting these characters every 8 years. i know children will probably watch it regardless (although idk how interested today's youth are in this franchise), but thematically it makes no sense to continue it unless Disney's just that desperate for money.

just market 5 as a full-fledged continuation with no ending in sight. it'll still be desperate (and i'll still likely see it when it hits D+ in 2027), but it'll at least be honest.

 

That Twitter thread points out they do something similar with English films with parts in a foreign language. They end up scrubbing the subtitles that were in the actual film so that they can have one unified subtitle font and style throughout the film.

It ruins a lot of different things. If you aren't paying attention, you might not even know the film switched languages or why that happened. It also doesn't differentiate when films leave foreign languages untranslated to immerse the viewer in the confusion or otherness of the scene or location.

 

when we watched La Chimera on Hulu the other day, Hulu's subtitles were covering up the film's own subtitles when characters were speaking other languages, super annoying

the scene is more of like a meet cute type scene that's kinda rom-com-y. without spoiling anything, the domestic violence reveal isn't really evident for the majority of the movie
