Listening to The Big Picture pod, the strategy for “Horizon” is such a strange choice. Apparently this first movie is basically all prologue and the second is where it gets going.

But it’s not like “Dune” where this has a built-in fanbase, other than people that like Costner. And even then, they’re gonna be pissed they had to sit through three hours of a build up to a trailer for the second movie.

Like, if this bombs, what do you even do about marketing part 2 in August? It’s all weird.

 

i don’t think it changes marketing for part 2 at all. it’ll effect whether 3 and 4 get made though

 

Man if this bombs, Costner is going to be enshrined forever as king of the bombs. The failures of Waterworld and The Postman derailed this man's whole career for over a decade. If that happens again I am honestly going to feel kinda bad for him.

 

I think I read it’s tracking for $11 million this weekend so not good!

 

Adding on top of that he threw one of the biggest shows on television completely under the bus to go make this.

Costner is a good filmmaker. Dances with Wolves is an all-timer. So I'm fully expecting to love Horizon and am glad that he set a ton of money on fire to make his passion project.
