The two subplots in the book that are cut out of the movie are mostly a waste of time. It also has a much more impactful ending.

I thought the Paper Girls adaptation was really successful in being something different from the comic but being the same story. It created space for so many moments the comics couldn’t provide. I thought it did a beautiful job with KJ’s arc.

Similarly, the Perks of Being a Wallflower adaptation is what comes to mind when I think of great adaptations. I love that it works as a companion piece to the book and that it shows you the bird’s eye view that we don’t get from reading Charlie’s letters.

Then you get something like Miseducation of Cameron Post that ends up having to cut the majority of the story and fast forwards you to the last third of the book because they can’t pace it well with Cam’s earlier years being included. Adaptations are so tricky but when they’re good, they’re good

Under the Skin and Mean Girls are adaptations, the question of how to adapt something is flexible and I’ve seen good and bad faithful adaptations and good and bad experimental adaptations. Personally Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood is close to my favorite version of Macbeth

Friday Night Lights is a great book, but I’d argue maybe the movie and definitely the show top it.

people are always saying they check out blockbusters in theaters and save the smaller dramas for home viewing but the opposite is best imo.

Day late. I just finished it with my classes to an overwhelmingly positive response. They did NOT like Wooderson or the senior/freshman age gaps, haha

Bold casting. I kind of respect casting a guy as He-Man that has sort of a femme vibe and isn't jacked, and not some the obvious choice of a huge stereotypically uber masculine dude like an Alan Ritchson. It could be interesting.

Late on the adaptation conversation, but The Maltese Falcon is a perfect one.

It doesnt make sence to judge adaptations on their faithfulness to their source. Dont pretend theres a formula for art, If its good its good. We dont pit cover songs agaisnt remixes and claim remixes arnt faithful and never good.
Its a shame movie adaptions suffer more than most other artforms that have been comidified into our capitalist copyright IP system were owning = earning.
I dream of world were once a piece has recuperate its cost and profited the creators X amount it is released to the public domain.

    Drive My Car was great.
