the cosmic coincidence of a song as so obviously lovestruck as (pls) set me on fire (OK it's about creative inspiration but READS like a love song) coming into my life recently is incredible and yes I'm dating again
I've listened to this album around 4-5 times now and the distance between this album and their other albums is astounding. It's so weak in comparison. Some standouts like (pls) set me on fire, Dead Wood and Giant Pacific Octopus, but like stuff like Jailbreak and It Hurts are such slogs. I'm very glad they finally got a number one album because it's very deserved as a band. Whoever said they need to go with an external producer for their next album is right on the money. They need someone else's influence and style to help pull new things out of them. I was thinking that while in the car listening to the album again.
I still like this a lot more than The Spark and probably more than Take to the Skies too. Haven't really listened to The Mindsweep enough to compare them fairly.
I can't understand how Jailbreak can be a slog. As Carrow said, that ending is just pure euphoria. It's easily my favourite on the album.
It's just so shallow and repetitive. It just feels like a worse interpretation of songs they've already done.
Didn't know Stray From The Path's drummer had a podcast, but it's really cool to see them in an environment where they can go more in depth and don't have to give more "scripted" answers to questions due to time constraints. I loved hearing about their music creating process.
As for the album, one week in, having done loads of listens and gone through most of their discography... it's settling in as their weakest for me. Oddly, I do think it's the one I would use to introduce someone to the band. It just distills what makes them them so well, taking bits from different eras and resulting in songs that seem more straightforward and accessible than they've ever been before. ^I also often get the feeling they've done this type of song or that specific sound better on previous releases, which is playing a lot into my feelings.
Unfortunately I have to agree with most of that has been said in recent in pages. One of my favorite bands of all time and I’ve loved all their records outside of the Spark, but the highs and lows are both much lower here than that one and it just doesn’t give me a lot to come back to.
Lmao I've gone from never listening to this band 20 minutes ago to now being on set me on fire for the 8th time in a row.
Listened to this so so so many times now. I don't think this album will ever be getting much rotation. I'm going to put songs like (pls) set me on fire, Dead Wood, Goldfish and Leap Into The Lightning on a casual playlist but that's all I really need from this album. Hopefully they'll knock it out of the park with the next one.
I'd probably say Vukovi are the closest I can think of though they lean more on riffs than the electronica. There's I See Stars too who do the electronicore thing well, and I'd work from the newest album backwards with them. Honestly, Enter Shikari are fairly unique, but they're the closest examples I can think of off the top of my head.
