Disney makes better movies now and these people clinging to the structures and tropes of the 90s movies (which I still adore) need to get real

But anyway, this movie is wildly good and my kids always want it on and dammit if I don’t sit down and lose an hour and a half each time because it locks me in too

Not top tier Disney. For a second there, I really thought this has coco/moana/walle special written alll over it. Love loved the entire first half. Songs were solid, animation was beautiful, and for a second, the story was kinda intriguing

But the 3rd act was way too simple and nice. Like way too nice. Grandma "sorry I'm too hard on the family", aw it's okay no harm no foul....insert ending song sequence.

Its definitely an overall "good" Disney flick, but id put it on the same level as Luca (I liked luca more).

I call it very good B+ quality Disney

If you were to tell me a song from this would be a hit, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” would not be my guess.

My wife was showing me some tik tok clips of it and they’re actually really well done

I'm not on Tik Tok but my gf is on there a lot so I hear the song pop up 15 times a day

Still crazy that it's surpassed Let It Go. It's not even a song that makes sense outside the movie!

Just watched this again with wife. Such a frustrating moie. I thought I'd be over my beef with this movie on 2nd watch but alas magnified even worse. The first hour and fifteen minutes is great! Like really great. Songs are solid and the story has such tremendous potential. If anything, watching the 2nd time made me like the first 75% of the movie even more.

    But...

But the "conflict" is resolved sooooo God damn fast!! Even my wife said "thats it?". Mirabel "runs away", obviously not too far since abuela walks to easily find her. They embrace. Done? House is rebuilt easily. Magic is back. Okay.

I would have at least accepted an ending where they don't get their powers back...or a movie where the family has to earn their powers back (or even if they want them).

You easily could have gone a billion ways with such a rich story like this.

Biggest ratio of great start, bland ending in quite some time

I can’t keep up with Disney critiques. First they’re monopolizing theaters (they are), but now they might also abandon theaters (they won’t)?

love to conveniently forget that we’re still waist deep in a pandemic purely for the sake of making a tweet.

But like Encanto was in theaters. I know because I took my family to see it. Though I actually met a Pixar animator at a party around Xmas and she said that Turning Red movie is not getting a theatrical release. So it’s just like Luca/Soul all over again. They just seem to be sticking it to Pixar only. Obviously Onward was in the heat of the first pandemic so they can make an excuse for that. I wanted to ask her how she felt about Luca/Soul being thrown on Disney plus only but didn’t think to ask at the time.

Also Turning Red could be going theatrical now since she told me that I haven’t checked.

I know, but (unless I am completely missing the mark) I think the argument/point trying to be made is that Disney will skip theater runs all together now based on how well Encanto did on streaming numbers vs. in theaters and I just don't think that's a sound comparison model right now because, at least as far as people we know are concerned, absolutely none of our friends with kids want to take them anywhere near movie theaters right now, so of course the streaming option is going to be more successful, but 3 years from now who knows if that will even be true.

I think people will always prefer the theater experience (maybe not with 2 or 3 kids in tow), but, idk it just seems like a silly time to be predicting Disney's future release behavior based on movies released during a global pandemic that are primarily geared towards child/family audiences.

Whatever they do, they just need to do it for everything. The double standard is a big thing people have an issue with.

The problem is paying how ever many dollars a month for a streaming service isn't feasible for a lot of people

In addition to there being no substitute for the theatrical experience

I don't think the issue is streaming services being unaffordable. now, if you're argument is needing to have 5 or 6 different services to make sure you can watch everything that comes out, sure i can see that point, but if we are talking strictly Disney+ here, $7.99/mo. for just D+ is extremely affordable, especially if you're comparing it to the cost of actually going to a theater to see a movie.

To go along with that, I disagree with the “There’s a time and place to see this on the big screen” because as we’ve seen with “Soul” and “Luca,” there’s been no time it’s been on the big screen and it doesn’t look like Disney is planning on ever giving them theatrical runs.
