The Substance is so much better than Emilia Perez.

 

im sure that is the case. it's less of a quality thing for that one like it is for emilia perez and is more about not handling body horror well

 

Substance was pretty good, just so exhausting and gross. I had more fun with this.

 

This is the exact boat I’m in. Trying to decide if looking away or fast forwarding here and there will be enough to get me through it or if the general concept will be too much

 

The Substance is only like 20% body horror

Nearly an hour’s worth of time in that film is devoted to the same shot of someone injecting a syringe into the same wound in a spine over and over again
and when it’s not body horror, it’s gross-out “food horror”

 

by my understanding though, isn't it like the entire climax of the movie haha?

 

It's a bloodbath but it is so cartoonishly over the top that it isn't really gross.

 

The end is the best part of that movie and yeah, by that point, it lost the ability to gross me out. Everything that comes before was more nauseating IMO.

Like an hour into this and it’s trending to be right up there for worst movie I’ve ever watched

 

I understand most of the criticism but this would at least be a fine/watchable movie if the music was good.

But I’m like an hour in and oh boy it’s a stinker all around.

 

I’d say the second half isn’t nearly as bad as the first. The first half has so many god-awful songs that it’s distractingly bad. Selena Gomez’s song in the club is the only good one out of this whole thing

This would probably be average-but-not-awful if it just didn’t have the music at all. Or maybe cut a lot of these bizarre 1-2min “songs” that just feel completely half-assed. Or leaned into being super campy? Idk.

Instead the entire thing feels so shallow

 

What the fuck was this movie…one of the most confounding things I’ve ever seen. Truly offensive in tone to any Mexican national that’s been touched by cartel violence.

also, WHY was this a musical when no one in the film can sing besides Selena.
