I love that DVD. The dual vocals on this album were next level. Still think Toby and Devin are two of the best vocalists of that era and possibly underrated overall.
spending a lot of time with the weaks end lately, such a killer debut with so many surprising twists and turns in each song. really charming record
Weak's End and Question are GOATed and anyone reading this either agrees or needs to do some extensive homework.
Curious to revisit it. I have fond memories of watching a couple of those streams when they were writing it, but ended up being let down by the whole thing. A few standouts but it sounded undercooked, like they were rushing to release something new which seemed to be their motto at the time. Also itching for a new album, it's been a while even though I remember them scrapping an album after Rub Some Dirt On It.
thats pretty dope, ive always liked that album more than most but still felt like they took it out of the oven a little early. curious how this changes things for me
I’m actually really excited for this. WLF was extremely disappointing to me at the time and I never really returned to it. Hopefully they’re right!
It did not strike me as super memorable, but I only gave it like one listen before it disappeared haha—and I've wanted to go back and give it more time on multiple occasions. Although I wonder how much a remaster can really do to fix an undercooked album, I will definitely check this out whenever it releases!
I think the production issues with White Line are in the mix as much, if not more, than the master. I feel like remastering is like polishing a turd a lot of the time. So maybe a little strange that it’s just a remaster after all this time. That said, I liked this album more than most when it came out, and I am very happy it will be easily available again. I will play this a good bit, just don’t know that it will do anything for people who it previously did nothing for.
listening to the remaster now, can definitely hear some differences with headphones (the end of some of us hit a lot harder, for instance) but overall it's not super noticeable to me on first pass. the two new songs are interesting - they sound really different for them.
been pretty drawn to you were never alone recently, honestly might think its their best album. definitely their most overlooked, feel like i never see it get talked about
Eve and White Line Fever are definitely the low points for me, no interest in those. You Were Never Alone is criminally underrated, some of their most interesting work.
I’ve always been baffled that YWNA didnt become their biggest record (esp among Emery fans) and a scene classic. It’s their most creative, fully realized form imo with songwriting on par with any other post-scene-heyday classic.
i fully agree. i remember eve getting a lot of buzz on release and being hyped up to that degree in the circles i was in but that ones much more inconsistent for me, altho i still like it
Yea I like em all but YWNA floored me. Loaded with insane bridges and outros, and gives you both “rock pebble stone” and “go wrong young man” on the same record but is still so cohesive. Truly their magnum opus.
i love ywna, probably my fourth favorite emery record. cool lyrical concept, great production, great song structures and styles. i still think i prefer their albums with a mix toby and devin writing/taking lead.
I do not know what it is about YWNA, it's that record for me where every time I listen to it I'm like "Holy shit I forgot how good this one is", and then I don't listen to it for awhile, come back, cycle repeats.
Pretty much exactly the same for me. It’s definitely a very underrated album in general, and I personally underrated it for years.
Still not really finding anything memorable in the first 4 songs but Some Of Us sounds quite different from what I remember arrangement wise. The main piano motif is kept but it seems to be surrounded by many more layers of instruments now so it sounds more fleshed out. The ending hits more as well. A highlight so far.
I like Biddy a lot, completely forgot about that one but it's def another highlight. Make Yourself Sick and Civil Wars remain my favorite songs here. That screaming breakdown on the latter, with piano on the forefront, is so sick and unusual. I'd say it's still my least favorite album. I don't mind when they lean on their mellow side but the whole thing ends up blending together at some point, and it contains nowhere the amount of memorable melodies and parts compared to their usual fare. A couple songs in the early stretch still sound stitched together too. I remember a few folks in here saying it felt like b-sides album back then, and I'm reminded of that feeling. Rub Some Dirt on It remains vastly superior. That said, I'm definitely going to spend more time with this for the foreseeable future to see if anything grows on me. One last thing, Night Ghost and If It Kills Me sounds so much punchier than the rest of the album it was jarring going from Sad Season to both lol. Despite the remaster, a certain raw, demo-y feel still persists I guess. If It Kills Me is so unlike anything they've done with that 80s pop influenced sound. Wonder if it's a hint of where they could be going next?
I wonder when the bonus tracks were written? Have they said anything about that? They don’t seem the kind of band to have sat on two bonus tracks since the original release, particularly when they have the Emeryland supporters.
