Hahaha hahaha I heard this too Ftr. It’s super different than that song, but the melody is similar.. the chord underneath it is so different
Alright thoughts after first listen. Some really interesting guitar work on here, like closest “solos” Matt’s ever gotten. Really good stuff. Lots of jazzy almost funky parts as well. This just feels like a rock and roll album, hard to explain but some of the bands catchiest material. It felt like they kept the screams really dry and uncompressed for this album, which is a cool decision mix wise. Dave’s drumming is unbelievable, he works better in this style, I’m not sure why. The two interlude tracks work really well back to back, wonder if peole will be annoyed.. I liked it Finally, Toby and Devin shine all over this record. This feels like album where they really combined their voices and styles in a way we havnt heard before.
My worst fear was to get this the same week as mewithoutYou. Ha! But really I should be thankful that two of my favourites are still putting out music 15+ years later. Just woken up so can’t wait to listen!
Had a listen on the way to work and I love it. I know I've said it before but Emery with Toby and Devin both writing just hits the spot for me in the way that the last two albums didn't quite. They are a very special combination.
Well after first listen, I must say damn, this album is so different yet it has that real Emery sound. I'll start with the negative: The two interlude is unnecessary in my opinion Some songs are so short, and for example Fear Yourself and Jesus Wept could have been just one song, they fit together so well On the positive side: I’m so glad that the song structures are more unique then ever The groovy stuff is amazing Some of their catchiest material Song name of the year: “People Always Ask Me if We're Going to Cuss in an Emery Song” Closer is a banger
Agree with all your points here both the positives and the negatives. The only thing I'd say is I didn't get the 'so different' vibe that you and others have talked about. Maybe the 'real Emery sound' is stopping me see that this album is different.
I do wish People Always Ask Me if We're Going to Cuss in an Emery Song just had Toby swearing for the entire duration. The lyrics are quite clever though.
I’ve always said this band could be great without screaming. I guess it’s tiem to see what people think.
I love this. From all the podcasts it sounds like Chris added a lot to the songwriting, and I’m very into it. Agree that Dave’s drumming sounds great. All the Devin songs are amazing and I think that’s what held YWNA back for me a little bit.
I've only listened three times but it felt like there was enough screaming - it didn't feel like it was lacking but nor did it feel like there was no screaming.
@teebs41 you just retweeted my Emery tweet on Twitter. Either that or you have an imposter using your name.
I actually like that record quite a bit. It has a few misses (definitely) but World Away, After The Devil Beats His Wife, Can't Stop The Killer, Story About A Man with a Bad Heart, and Don't Bore Us Get To The Chorus are all really solid in my opinion.
There was one part on this record where the harmonies got a little goofy. It def tries to push boundary lines only a man did except I just think it’s executed better here
