I'm finally getting into Elton John, I'm not sure why it took me so long to do so. Holy hell he's amazing.
The star of that album is absolutely Paul Buckmaster. His string arrangements on that record are unlike anything else in rock history. "Levon" and the title track for sure, but god "Indian Sunset" is just one of the most gorgeous arrangements in recorded music.
Everything from 1970 to 1976 is just phenomenal. At one point during that span, he was under contract for 3 albums in a year. Just goes to show you the streak he was on and how times have changed. If you’re looking for a deep dive, the “Classic Albums” documentary episode for Good Bye Yellow Brick Road has some great behind-the-scenes stories and footage.
I'm gonna see it, but I'm already huffy that Davey, Ray, Nigel and Dee are not named characters in the cast list.
Took Honky Chateau on a car ride to get out of the house today and Davey on "Rocket Man" might be one of the best performances a guitarist has ever had on a song. The acoustic, the slide leading into the chorus, the volume swells near the end. Just every subtle touch is perfect.
