Steven Paul "Elliott" Smith (August 6, 1969 – October 21, 2003) was an American singer, songwriter, and musician. Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska, raised primarily in Texas, and lived for much of his life in Portland, Oregon, where he first gained popularity. Smith's primary instrument was the guitar, though he was also proficient with piano, clarinet, bass guitar, drums, and harmonica. Smith had a distinctive vocal style, characterized by his "whispery, spiderweb-thin delivery", and used multi-tracking to create vocal layers, textures, and harmonies.

Can't believe there was no thread for him! One of the great American songwriters as far as I'm concerned.

trying to come up with a top five for him is so hard. I usually lean on Alameda, 2:45 AM, Angeles, Needle in the Hay, and Big Nothing. Either/Or is one of my favorite records of all time.

I learned 2:45 am recently (a month or so ago) and almost dropped a letter grade in my English final bc I did that instead of studying

One of the first songs I ever tried to learn! The full band coming in during the outro is one of my favorite moments from him

I wish it was one of my firsts, it's super encouraging being able to play it.
I love that part too. what entranced me the first time I heard it was that melody in between playing the chords. Good songwriting can be so rock solid simple, so wild. Favorite song off that album.

I think I was four months old! Listening to this rn, 2:45 am floors me every time, as does the entire album. I know he didn't really think in riffs but. He had riffs tho. Great songwriting this album.

It took me forever to listen to him, didn't first play all of either/or til last year I think, but what a perfect album and I'm glad I did. Heard his influence for so long but he's still so fresh

Whoever gets their mitts on the expanded edition, let me know what you think! I'm curious to see if people think it's an essential purchase or not.
